No. 23 New Hampshire Edges Men's Soccer, 2-1

DURHAM, N.H. – Graduate student Quinn Matulis netted the equalizer off a corner kick for the second consecutive game, but this time, the Boston University men's soccer team ultimately came up short in a hard-fought 2-1 defeat at No. 23 New Hampshire Sunday evening.

The Wildcats (1-0-1) struck first in the 35th minute and later responded to Matulis' 69th minute strike with the go-ahead header at 74:15 to hand the Terriers (1-1-0) their first defeat of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU earned the game's first corner in the third minute, but UNH would attempt the first five shots, including a pair from 2022 All-American midfielder Yannick Bright at 13:29 and 14:24, respectively.
  • UNH blocked senior Eitan Rosen's shot attempt during the 26th minute and blocked away senior Griffin Roach's header on the ensuing corner kick.
  • Senior Francesco Montali kept the game scoreless with a pair of saves, but Taig Healy would give UNH the lead at 34:26 by making a run into the box and firing a shot inside the near post underneath Montali's legs.
  • Montali followed with two more saves to keep the deficit at just 1-0, as the Wildcats posted an 11-2 advantage in shots.
  • The second half was a much different affair with Rosen setting the tone on a hard header off senior Andrew Rent's cross that nailed the crossbar at 47:13.
  • BU kept on the attack with junior Kevin Torres forcing UNH keeper Joseba Incera to make a leaping save at 64:25.
  • The Terriers finally broke through in the 69th minute after drawing a foul to set up Matulis' successful free kick inside the near post.
  • UNH hit the post just 20 seconds later and eventually grabbed the lead for good during the 75th minute when Georgios Koliniatis headed in Liam Beenett's cross inside the right post past a diving Montali.
  • Incera saved junior Daniel Kim's low shot attempt at 83:02 and later watched Matulis send one right of the net with three seconds remaining in regulation for the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Montali recorded six saves against Incera's two stops.
  • BU tied UNH in shot attempts during the second half, 7-7, to end the game down, 18-9.
  • The Wildcats edged the Terriers in corner kicks, 6-3, after posting an 18-1 advantage last season in the 1-0 home loss to BU.
  • UNH cut BU's all-time series lead to 24-23-9 all-time.

  • BU will wrap up the two-game road trip with its first-ever visit to Saint Joseph's on Thursday (Aug. 31) at 7 p.m.
