Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 3 Terriers Edged in Overtime by Northeastern, 4-3

BOSTON - Sophomore Ryan Greene scored an extra-attacker goal with 1:11 remaining in regulation to force overtime, but Northeastern scored a power-play goal in the extra period to defeat the Boston University men's ice hockey team, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.

BU (16-7-1, 11-4-1 HE) erased a 3-1 third-period deficit thanks to goals by Greene and sophomore Quinn Hutson. The Terriers dominated possession in overtime, but a controversial too many men on the ice call led to a Husky power play and the home team cashed in with 33 seconds on the clock.

Freshman Macklin Celebrini scored his 18th goal of the season and had the primary helper on Greene's equalizer. Hutson also added an assist to finish with two points while his brother and classmate, Lane, tallied two assists of his own. Sophomore Jeremy Wilmer had the other assist on Greene's strike, and Greene himself notched an assist to complete a two-point evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northeastern opened the scoring at 15:16 of the first frame.
  • Freshman Jack Harvey created the Terriers' best chance of the opening frame with less than 2:00 to go when he stole the puck in the NU zone and went in alone on Cameron Whitehead (38 saves), but Whitehead was equal to the task.
  • BU nearly took advantage of an icing call with less than 10 seconds left when the Terriers won the ensuing faceoff and junior Jack Hughes zipped a pass to senior Dylan Peterson at the crease, forcing Whitehead to make another save.
  • Celebrini evened the score on the Terriers' first power play of the night with 5:16 left in the second stanza. Freshman Shane Lachance provided the perfect screen in front of Whitehead as Celebrini's wrister from the top of the zone sailed into the back of the net.
  • Northeastern scored the first two goals of the third period, including a power-play marker, to grab a 3-1 lead with 11:28 to play.
  • Quinn Hutson got a goal back for BU just 1:16 after Northeastern doubled its lead when Lane zipped a terrific pass through a sea of defenders to his wide-open brother in front of the net. Quinn finished the play for his 10th goal of the season.
  • The Terriers pulled Mathieu Caron (25 saves) in favor of an extra attacker with 2:12 remaining and the move paid off, as Greene knocked home a rebound after Whitehead kicked away a Celebrini shot.
  • BU was in total control during the overtime until Northeastern was given its fourth power play of the night midway through the 3-on-3 session.
