Women’s Basketball Travels to Lafayette for PL Road Opener

BOSTON – After capturing a win in its Patriot League opener earlier in the week, the Boston University women's basketball team heads to Lafayette for its first league road contest on Saturday (Jan. 6). Opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
 
BU (9-3, 1-0 PL) puts its four-game winning streak on the line, which is its longest on the year. Against out-of-conference foes, the Terriers were 2-2 on the road, with wins coming against Northern Colorado and Northeastern.
 
Lafayette (6-6, 1-0 PL) returns to the Kirby Athletic Center for the first time since Dec. 11, and just the second game since Nov. 21. The Leopards' lone home victory came on that day against NJIT, an 83-60 result.
 
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU captured a 62-51 win over Navy in its conference lid-lifter on Wednesday (Jan. 3) in Terrier Town.
  • The Terriers led by as many as 15 points and trailed for only 2:14 in the game.
  • Senior Caitlin Weimar posted her eighth double-double of the year with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Classmate Kelsi Mingo set a career-high with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, adding three steals and two blocks.
  • Junior Alex Giannaros totaled 11 points and four swipes.
  • Head Coach Melissa Graves became the fastest coach in program history to reach 50 wins at BU with the triumph, achieving the feat in 76 games.
  • Under Graves, the Terriers have won all three of their Patriot League openers. Prior to her tenure, BU won four in eight seasons.
  • Weimar is tied atop the Patriot League leaderboard and tied for 11th in the country in double-doubles. She ranks top-three in the conference in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, blocks, and minutes played.
  • Giannaros has recorded four steals in three of her last four appearances, already setting a personal-best this year with a team-high 25 steals. She had 31 swipes combined in her first two seasons.
  • Across her last nine matchups, Mingo is shooting nearly 46 percent from deep.
  • Senior Sophie Beneventine has seven games this year with three or more assists, including her last three contests. 
SCOUTING LAFAYETTE
  • The Leopards defeated Army West Point on the road in their first Patriot League game, 68-42, on Jan. 3.
  • Lafayette has won two-straight after sustaining a three-game losing streak.
  • Abby Antognoli paces the Leopards with 13.6 points per game, 26 threes, 38 assists, and 24 steals. Her 37.7 minutes per game ranks second in the nation.
  • Makayla Andrews also averages double figures with 12.4 points on 41.2 percent shooting.
  • Lafayette was projected to finish eighth in the preseason poll under seventh-year head coach Kia Damon-Olson.
  • A year ago, the Leopards went 7-11 in league play and 10-19 overall, falling to Loyola Maryland in the Patriot League Tournament opening round.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday marks the 31st all-time meeting between BU and Lafayette in a series that began in 1987.
  • The Terriers hold a 20-10 advantage in the rivalry.
  • BU has also taken six of the last seven, and eight of the previous 10 contests.
  • The Leopards' last victory in the series was at the Kirby Athletic Center on Feb. 23, 2022.
  • Overall, the Terriers are 8-7 on the road against Lafayette.
  • BU swept the season series in 2022-23 with 66-48 and 83-54 wins. Weimar averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds on 20-of-31 shooting. The Terriers' rebounding margin was +29 across both matchups.
