Field Hockey Visits Top-Seeded American in Patriot League Semifinal on Thursday

Making its 10th Patriot League tournament appearance in 12 seasons, the fourth-seeded Boston University field hockey team will visit the nation's capital to take on top-seeded American in the semifinal round of the Patriot League Championship on Thursday (Nov. 9). 

Second-seeded Lafayette will face third-seeded Bucknell in the second semifinal at 2 p.m. The two winners will meet for the title on Saturday (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m.

TOURNAMENT NOTES
  • This is just the second time since 2014 that the Terriers are in the Patriot League tournament and are not the No. 1 seed. In the past nine seasons, BU has claimed the top seed six times, missed the tournament twice and was the No. 3 seed last year. 
  • The Terriers are 12-5 all-time in the Patriot League tournament.
  • BU is 8-1 all-time in the Patriot League semifinal round with the lone loss coming last year against Lafayette
  • The Terriers are 4-4 in the championship game.
  • This will be the sixth postseason meeting between the Terriers and Eagles - the first since 2018 - and BU holds a 3-2 edge.
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The Terriers had three All-Patriot League honorees as senior Payton Anderson and junior Martu Coulo were named to the first team while sophomore Nicole Lauro received second-team recognition.
  • Anderson became just the third Terrier to earn All-PL honors four times, joining Sofi Laurito '16 and Hester van der Laan '17.
  • Senior Tegan Poerio earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the second consecutive season and junior Megan Wetzel joined her on the squad.
  • BU is now 6-10 on the year and finished up the regular season on Sunday with a 2-1 home loss against Cornell.
  • Anderson leads the team in both points (21) and goals (10) with her goal total ranking tied for third among Patriot League players.
  • Anderson stands in 10th on BU's career points list with 76.
  • Fifth-year senior Tess Csejka and junior Natalie Epperson each have four goals while Poerio (1g, 5a) and Katie Devine (3g, 1a) and junior Megan Wetzel (7a) have all tallied seven points.
  • Wetzel ranks fourth among Patriot League players in assists this season. 
  • The Terriers have scored on 16 of their 76 corners this season for a conversion percentage of 21.0 percent, which ranks in the top 10 nationally.
  • Graduate student Kate Thomason has started the past 14 contests in goal for BU and has a 2.45 goals-against average and a .715 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
  • American completed an undefeated conference season with a 2-0 victory at Bucknell on Saturday.  
  • Steve Jennings was named Patriot League Coach of the Year on Tuesday for the 12th time while graduate student Bryn Underwood was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and freshman Olivia Morraye received Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors.
  • Underwood, senior midfielder Agustina Roffo and senior defender Tayla-Jade Weiss earned All-Patriot League First Team honors while sophomore Jordan Reicher earned second-team honors.
  • The Eagles earned non-conference wins against Longwood, Lock Haven, William & Mary, Penn and Hofstra.
  • Reicher has had a breakout season and leads the team with 17 points and is tied with Rolfo for the lead in goals with seven apiece.
  • Seniors Federica Turina Dellamaggiore and Kaleigh Missimer each have scored four goals.
  • Underwood, who repeated as the PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year, is in her fifth year as the Eagles' primary goalkeeper and sports a .794 save percentage to go along with a 1.13 goals-against average.

SERIES HISTORY VS. AMERICAN

  • BU is 13-7 in 20 all-time meetings with the Eagles. 
  • The Terriers had won four straight road meetings against American before dropping a 2-0 contest in D.C. earlier this season.
  • Last season, the Terriers dropped a 2-0 home contest to American in the regular-season finale.
  • The schools first met during the 1997 season.
