BOSTON – The No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime contest to Northeastern in the championship game of the 71st Dunkin' Beanpot in front of a sellout crowd at TD Garden on Monday evening.
Â
BU never trailed in the game as the Huskies rallied from three one-goal deficits before Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored with 28.6 seconds left to lift the Huskies to the title.
Â
Freshman
Macklin Celebrini and sophomores
Devin Kaplan and
Lane Hutson each scored a goal for the Terriers, who move to 19-8-1 on the season. Freshman
Tom Willander, sophomore
Jeremy Wilmer and freshman
Jack Harvey each recorded an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU opened the scoring at the 14:41 mark of the first period. Harvey forced a turnover in front of the Northeastern net and quickly slid it back to Celebrini for the freshman phenom's NCAA-leading 23rd goal of the season.
- Northeastern answered at 5:52 of the second, but Kaplan responded at 9:11 of the stanza. Willander helped force a turnover in the Huskies' zone and Kaplan picked up the puck and skated up the right wing with Stevens joining him to create a 2-on-1. Kaplan attempted to pass the puck to Stevens, but it deflected off a Northeastern stick and past Cameron Whitehead (33 saves).
- Justin Hryckowian evened the score again just 39 seconds after Kaplan's goal, but Hutson regained the lead for BU in the final seconds of the frame. Wilmer collected a pass from Hutson at the NU blue line and skated deep into the zone, eventually getting below the left circle. His patience paid off, as Hutson got free in the slot for a one-timer that got through Whitehead with just 7.2 seconds on the clock.
- Northeastern was given a power play opportunity with 11:24 remaining in regulation and took advantage just over a minute later when Jack Williams scored on a one-timer from the left circle to tie the game at 3-3.
- BU responded well after the goal and continued to dominate play but the Huskies withstood the pressure and got to overtime.
- The Terriers outshot the Huskies, 6-1, in the 3-on-3 session but Northeastern got the game-winner with 28.6 seconds remaining to claim the Beanpot.
