BOSTON – In the first spring race of the 2023-24 season, the Boston University lightweight rowing team picked up four wins against Wellesley and MIT's openweight crews on Saturday morning along the Charles River.
 
Though sunny skies greeted the course for the first time this week, wind gusts approached nearly 30 miles per hour, creating a fierce headwind with a slight cross coming from Cambridge.
 
Despite that, BU's Varsity 8 started the day with a win in a time of 7:45.9. The Terriers, coxed by Rayna Kuthiala and stroked by Cece Mason, finished nearly 12 seconds ahead of the second-place Engineers.
 
In the Second Varsity 8, BU, coxed by Heather Shinn and stroked by Savanna Jacovini, crossed the finish line in 7:54.0. That was good for first with an over 14-second cushion on MIT.
 
The Terriers' Third Varsity 8, coxed by Mayela Goal and stroked by Sam Angel, consisted of nearly all novice rowers. Nonetheless, BU was victorious in a time of 9:21.2, overcoming the headwind to finish over 23 seconds ahead of the runner-up Engineers.
 
BU's Varsity 4, coxed by Mayberry Mark and stroked by Emilia Vukasinovic, competed in a dual race against MIT only, and triumphed in 9:05.1.
 
With the first spring race in Head Coach Mary Foster's tenure in the books, BU turns its attention to races against Bates and Boston College on Sunday (April 7).
