Terriers Wrap Knecht Cup With Lightweight 8 Victory

April 14, 2024

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – In an abbreviated version of the Knecht Cup, the Boston University lightweight rowing program captured the Danielle Kousoulis Memorial Trophy with a win in the Lightweight 8 event on Sunday afternoon on the Cooper River.

Overall, the Terriers won six heats across their 10 entries, and placed top-three in the finals of the Lightweight 8, Varsity 8, and Second Varsity 8.

Due to strong winds and unsafe water conditions in the launch area on Saturday, the first day of racing was canceled, and multiple events were limited to morning heats and/or singular finals.

In the Women's Double, all three BU crews won their respective heats. The "A" crew of Kylie Lough and Caroline Burchette posted the fastest time of any Double at 7:45.41, while the "B" duo of Alanna Hoffman and Zoe Meurer was second at 7:50.09.

The Terriers' Second Varsity 4, coxed by Mayberry Mark and stroked by Savanna Jacovini, finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:44.93, the best time out of all 12 entries.

BU's Lightweight 4, coxed by Heather Shinn and stroked by Nina Palmer, was third behind Harvard-Radcliffe and Wisconsin in the final with a time of 7:34.60. The Varsity 4, coxed by Mayela Gaol and stroked by Jasmine Wu, placed third in its heat at 8:26.93.

In the Second Varsity 8, the Terriers, with Mark as the coxswain and Palmer in the stroke seat, were first in Heat 1 in 6:52.18, the only crew to cross in under 6:55.00. The lone lightweight crew in the final, BU was third behind MIT and UMass at 6:59.05, beating out boats from Delaware, UConn, and Jacksonville.

Next up was the Varsity 8, coxed by Rayna Kuthiala and stroked by Maecy Rickman. After capturing first place in the opening heat at 6:43.14, the Terriers finished second in the final with a time of 6:48.74, about four seconds behind Harvard-Radcliffe's lightweight crew.

The BU Lightweight 8, with Shinn as the coxswain and Rickman in the stroke seat, faced off against Radcliffe, Georgetown, and MIT. The Terriers triumphed in a time of 6:44.32 to earn the Danielle Kousoulis Memorial Trophy for the second-straight year.

BU's Novice 8, coxed by Katie Lee and stroked by Emilia Vukasinovic, battled with Wisconsin's lightweight crew in a close race, finishing second by just 1.25 seconds in 7:21.27. That piece was the second-fastest among all nine entries.

The Terriers return to the Charles River on Saturday (April 20), taking on Harvard-Radcliffe and MIT in the annual Beanpot.
