BOSTON – The Boston University lightweight rowing team won three of the four events against local rivals Bates and Boston College on Sunday (April 7) on the Charles River.
BU captured victories in the Varsity 8, Varsity 4, and Second Varsity 8, while placing second in the Third Varsity 8 race.
Overcast for most of the morning with temperatures in the upper 40s, varying wind speeds reached as high as 12 miles per hour.
BU's Varsity 8, coxed by
Heather Shinn and stroked by
Maecy Rickman, sported a five-seat lead on the Eagles that increased to a full length by the Mass. Ave. Bridge. The Terriers went on to capture first with nearly half a length of open water at 6:50.9.
In the Second Varsity 8 race, the Terriers, coxed by
Rayna Kuthiala and stroked by
Nina Palmer, went wire-to-wire after making their move at 500 meters, winning the event over runner-up Boston College by about three lengths of open water at 7:01.0.
The fours raced next, and the Varsity 4 crew, coxed by
Mayberry Mark and stroked by
Emilia Vukasinovic, took the lead at the 1,000-meter mark to finish a length ahead at first in a time of 7:47.6. The Second Varsity 4, coxed by
Lylah Nag and stroked by
Serena Jabre, was in the lead for most of the opening half of the race, and fended off the Eagles' push at the 1,500-meter mark to place second in 7:52.3.
BU's Third Varsity 8, coxed by
Katie Lee and stroked by
Sam Angel, wrapped the day with a second-place result in a time of 7:37.2. The Terriers were even with Boston College's Fourth Varsity 8 until the final 500 meters, finishing about a length-and-a-half of open water on the 4V8.
The Terriers return to action next weekend at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. from April 13-14.
