WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – In the first day of the 2024 IRA National Championship Regatta on Friday (May 31), the 11th-ranked Boston University men's rowing program sent all four of its crews to the top semifinals in their respective entries.
All three Terrier eights finished in the top-two of their heats to move on to the A/B Semifinals on Saturday (June 1). BU's Varsity 4 reached the A/B/C Semifinals before placing into the C Final in the afternoon.
Exceptional conditions greeted rowers the entire day, with sunny skies and temperatures climbing into the 70s. In addition to flat water, there was a negligible cross-headwind from the port side in the morning, though gusts reached 18 miles per hour in the afternoon with a slight tailwind.
BU started the day with its Varsity 8, coxed by
Emily Slawin and stroked by
Ali El Sayed. The Terriers, in Lane 2, faced a test with Navy in Lane 5. As Harvard and Princeton battled for first, BU built out a full-length lead over the Midshipmen by the 1,500-meter mark. Navy increased its rate from that point, but a strong push from the Terrier crew helped BU finish third in 5:43.286, over seven seconds ahead of the Midshipmen.
The Terrier Second Varsity 8, coxed by
James Smith and stroked by
Bowen de Gouw, engaged in a close battle with Syracuse and Stanford for second place. The Terriers jumped out to second behind California in the first half of the race. The Orange took control by a few seats with 500 meters to go, and the Cardinal gained momentum in the final quarter of the course, but BU finished strong in 5:53.529 to place third.
In the Third Varsity 8 race, the Terriers, coxed by
Peter Adams and stroked by
Dylan Fagiani, accelerated out of the start to move into second ahead of Syracuse, trailing only Washington. BU would gradually build an open-water advantage over the Orange, and were nearly three-quarters of a length behind the Huskies for the top spot. Washington would win the heat, but the Terriers placed second in 5:54.104, over eight seconds ahead of Syracuse.
BU's Varsity 4, coxed by
Hannah Noguchi and stroked by
Filippo de Marsanich, completed its time trial in 6:18.258, advancing to the A/B/C Semifinals with the 15th-fastest time in the field. In Lane 1 for it's A/B/C semifinal race, all six crews had little separation in the first 500 meters. As the other boats pulled away from there, BU and Penn locked into a battle for fifth, where the Terriers executed a strong push in the final quarter to cross the line ahead of the Quakers in 6:27.313.
Saturday's action begins at 8:50 a.m., where the Varsity 8 competes for a spot in the Grand Final. The Second Varsity 8 rows in its A/B Semifinal at 9:10 a.m., while the Third Varsity 8 races at 9:40 a.m. In its final race of the weekend, the Varsity 4 takes part in the C Final at 11 a.m.
