The Boston University field hockey team will open its 48th varsity season on Friday (Aug. 29) when it hosts Providence at 11 a.m. in the nation's first Division I field hockey game of the 2025 season. 

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The Terriers will play at home in six of their first seven games this season.
  • Senior Natalie Epperson is the leading returner in points (8) and goals (4) while classmate Megan Wetzel had a team-best seven assists last season.
  • BU was picked fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll while senior Martu Coulo and junior Nicole Lauro earned spots on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
  • Coulo, Lauro and juniors Maggie Driscoll and Olivia Hammer were all named to the NFHCA Division I Watchlist on Thursday.
  • The Terriers welcomed a six-member freshman class with student-athletes from Argentina, Northern Ireland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maine and Connecticut.
  • Seniors Maddie Hudson and Celia Nocivelli are serving as co-captains this season.
  • Sally Starr enters her 45th season as head coach of the Terriers. 
SCOUTING THE FRIARS
  • Providence went 7-10 in 2024 and finished one game back of the final spot in the Big East tournament.
  • The Friars' first two games this season are on the road and will be followed by a seven-game homestand.
  • Juniors Bo Martina and Macie Pennisi are the team's top two returning point-getters and were both named to the 2025 Preseason All-Big East Team.
  • Martina (5g, 8a) and Pennisi (5g, 2a) combined for 30 points last fall as sophomores.
  • That duo was joined by classmate Florencia Talarico on the NFHCA Division I Watchlist.

SERIES HISTORY VS. PC

  • BU is 23-12 all-time against the Friars.
  • The Terriers have won eight of the past nine meetings, including a 3-0 road victory in last year's season opener.
  • Then-sophomore Sophie Ortyl made seven saves in last year's contest to earn a shutout in her first career start.
UP NEXT
  • BU will stay at home and return to action next Friday (Sept. 5) when it hosts Vermont.
  • Game time at New Balance Field is set for 4 p.m.
