BOSTON, MA-The Terrier women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2004-05 season by losing to nationally ranked Harvard, 7-0, on Saturday, Jan. 29.
B.U. was scheduled to open its season last Saturday, Jan. 22, against the University of New Hampshire, but the match was postponed because of snow.
The Terriers opened their Harvard match by losing the doubles points to the Crimson, which entered the match ranked 35th in the nation. At number one, sophomore Erin Katims (Boca Raton, FL) and junior Laura Ahmes (East Sarasota, FL) dropped a 3-8 decision to the nation's 48th-ranked doubles team of Courtney Bergman and Elsa O'Riain.
The numbers two and three doubles matches were both decided by the same score, 8-4. Junior captain Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX) and freshman Gina Sabatino (Waltham, MA) lost to the Crimson's Melissa Anderson and Celia Durkin at number two, while junior Aimee Charest (Somerset, MA) and freshman Katarina Draganova (Sofia, Bulgaria) lost their number three doubles match to Alexis Martire and Preethi Mukundan.
Harvard also swept all six singles matches in straight sets. The most competitive match came at number one where Ahmes lost to O'Riain, who is ranked 104th in the nation, 5-7, 3-6.
At number two, Katims lost to 123rd-ranked Durkin, 3-6, 0-6, while Sabatino dropped a 3-6, 3-6, decision to 93rd-ranked Mukundan. At number four, Katims lost to Martire, 4-6, 3-6, and Shepherd lost to Anderson, 4-6, 2-6. Finally, Draganova lost her number-six singles match to Stephanie Schnitter, 1-6, 4-6.
