B.U. Wins 12th Consecutive America East Championship

New Haven, CT - Top-seeded Boston University downed Binghamton, 4-1, in the title match to clinch the 2005 America East Conference Championship at the Connecticut Tennis Center on Sunday, May 1.

With its 12th straight conference title, the Terriers will make their seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Terriers took an early 1-0 lead as juniors Laura Ahmes (East Sarasota, FL) and Cheri Lapane (Reading, MA) teamed up to win the number one doubles match, 8-2. Junior Aimee Charest (Somerset, MA) and freshman Katerina Draganova (Sofia, Bulgaria) won a hard-fought doubles match at the number three spot, 8-8, 9-7.

In singles action, sophomore Erin Katims (Boca Raton, FL) defeated Lya Kushnirovich at the number three, 7-5, 6-3, Charest downed Alyssa Freeman, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and junior Monica Shepard (Austin, TX) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vera Popova. Freshmen Gina Sabatino (Waltham, MA) and Draganova were also winning their matches before play was called. Binghamton earned its only singles victory at the number one spot as Zeynep Altinay defeated Ahmes, 6-3, 6-3.

The Terriers will await their seeding for the 2005 NCAA Tournament, which begins on Friday, May 13. The bracket will be announced on ESPNews on Wednesday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m.
