BOSTON - The Terriers (8-8-2, 6-6-1 HE) play their lone two-game home series of the season, beginning on Friday night when the University of Maine Black Bears (14-6-0, 7-4-0 Hockey East) visit Agganis Arena for the first time since it was built. The two teams squared off once earlier in the season, when the Terriers edged the Black Bears, 2-1, at Maine’s Alfond Arena on Nov. 6.

BU is coming off a 4-0 blanking of Northeastern last Saturday (Jan. 7), and is 3-1-0 in its last four outings. Maine is hot off a weekend sweep of UMass Lowell, and is 5-1-0 in its last six.

The Terriers and Black Bears have played 91 times since the 1923-24 season, and Maine holds the slight edge, 42-41, with 8 ties (.505). Since the formation of Hockey East in 1984-85, the Black Bears’ hold a 31-28-8 (.522) league advantage. Sixteen of the previous 91 games have gone into overtime and BU holds the 5-2-9 (.594) advantage in those games. The Terriers’ longest winning streak was 13 games from Jan. 16, 1982 through Feb. 15, 1986, while the Black Bears’ longest streak was 11 games from Oct. 31, 1986 to Nov. 10, 1989 and came just after the BU win streak.

Junior goaltender John Curry came up big with 37 saves to help lift the Terriers over then No. 2 Maine, 2-1, on Nov. 6 at Alfond Arena. It was BU’s first win in the Black Bears’ home in five games and it broke a seven-game Maine win streak. Goaltending made the difference for the Terriers, as Curry made 19 saves in the last period to hold on to the lead that BU secured late in the second after being down by a goal at the first intermission. Senior co-captain Brad Zancanaro netted the game-winner while rookie Jason Lawrence scored his first career goal.
