CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston University men's ice hockey team closed out November with one of its more disappointing performances so far this season, dropping a 6-2 road contest against No. 19 Boston College at Conte Forum on Friday evening. Junior Brandon Yip and senior Pete MacArthur recorded power-play tallies for the Terriers, who fall to 4-8-2 on the year and 3-4-1 in Hockey East play.
Freshman goaltender John Muse recorded 33 saves for the Eagles and junior Nathan Gerbe recorded half of BC's goals - including two shorthanded markers - to post a hat trick and help his team move to .500 at 4-4-5 overall with a 3-3-4 conference mark.
The Eagles opened the scoring with three straight first-period goals in a span of two minutes, 17 seconds and never looked back. The Terriers used Yip's goal to get within 3-1 entering the first intermission, but the home team scored the following three goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead. MacArthur closed out the scoring to extend his goal-scoring streak to four games.
Gerbe got things started for the Eagles at the 5:10 mark of the first, sending a rebound past sophomore goaltender Brett Bennett. Another loose puck got the best of the Bennett 1:22 later, as the goaltender elected not to gather a rebound off a shot freshman Nick Petrecki and senior Pat Gannon outraced the BU defense to knock home the puck.
With the Terriers looking to take advantage of their first power-play chance of the evening following a hitting after the whistle call to BC's Tim Filangieri at 7:16 of the first, the Eagles instead capitalized off a turnover, as Gerbe intercepted a pass and hustled to the other end of the ice before sneaking the puck inside the right pipe to cap the early three-goal spurt
The Terriers did take advantage of a 4-on-3 opportunity later in the period, however, as Yip blasted home his fourth goal of the season from just inside the left faceoff circle at 12:09. Quick passing from freshmen Colin Wilson and Colby Cohen earned them assists on the play.
That would be the closest the visitors would get the rest of the way though, as the Eagles scored each of the two goals recorded in the second period to put the game away.
A BU turnover behind its own net was taken full advantage of by sophomore Ben Smith, as stuffed in the puck by the left pipe to make it a 4-1 affair just under five minutes into the second period. Freshman Andrew Orpik beat Bennett short-side on a power play with just 1:15 left in the period.
Gerbe capped his hat trick with another unassisted shorthanded goal when he knocked home his own rebound off a breakaway against senior goaltender Karson Gillespie, who replaced Bennett at the beginning of the third before being whistled for a game misconduct with under four minutes left to play.
The Terriers' power play created another goal just before the midpoint of the third when MacArthur beat Muse from the left side on assists from sophomore Brian Strait and senior Bryan Ewing.
Bennett made 25 saves for the Terriers and Gillespie added eight. BU was outshot for just the second time all season, as the Eagles enjoyed a 39-35 advantage in that department.
The two teams will close out the home-and-home series on Saturday night at Agganis Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
