NEWTON, Mass. -
The Boston University field hockey team dropped a 5-1 contest to 13th-ranked Duke on Sunday afternoon at Newton Campus Field. Junior Maryette Stuart scored the Terriers' lone goal on a penalty stroke in the second half. BU now stands at 4-8 on the season.
BU held a 12-10 advantage in shots and each team earned three penalty corners, but the Blue Devils took advantage of their chances and got a hat-trick performance from Amie Survilla to come away with the victory and move to 6-5 on the year.
After Duke took a 2-0 lead into the half on goal by Jordan Miller and Survilla, the Terriers were able to get on the board in the 54th minute. A point-blank shot by redshirt freshman Macey Gaumond was initially saved by Duke goaltender Samantha Nelson but was then ruled to be covered up, resulting in a penalty stroke. Stuart converted the stroke at 53:07 to cut the deficit in half.
Duke regained a two-goal lead on a breakaway tally less than five minutes after BU scored and then Survilla another just 22 seconds later to take a 4-1 advantage. Survilla capped her hat trick at the 61:44 mark to account for the 5-1 final.
Nelson made six saves in goal for the Blue Devils, while junior Amanda Smith made three stops in the BU goal before redshirt freshman Julie Collins played the final 8:16.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 10) when they travel to Connecticut to face Fairfield for a conference contest beginning at 1 p.m.
