CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team got some payback against conference rival Boston College, downing the Eagles 4-0 on Wednesday night at Conte Forum. In the first meeting of the season, the Eagles defeated the Terriers, 2-1, on their home ice.
The win puts the Terriers at 6-4-5 on the season and 4-3-1-1 in conference action while BC falls to 4-4-5 on the year and 3-3-2-2 in Hockey East. The Terriers killed eight penalties on the night, marking the second straight game BU has held BC scoreless on the power-play.
Goalie Melissa Haber recorded her seventh career shutout, tying her with Allyse Wilcox for the all-time program record. A pair of BU goals in both the first and second periods gave the visitors a 4-0 lead after two periods of play. Lauren Cherewyk and Jill Cardella found the scoresheet in the first, while defensemen Carly Warren and Sarah Appleton were the goal-scorers in the middle stanza.
After both teams took the first half of the opening period to gather their bearings, the Terriers broke through with 9:19 on the clock. Jillian Kirchner brought the puck towards the front of the cage to Jenelle Kohanchuk, who had her attempt blocked by BC keeper Kiera Kingston, but the rebound was stuffed home by Cherewyk for a 1-0 lead.
The Terriers doubled their lead with 15:44 gone in the first as Cardella found the back of the net off feeds from Melissa Anderson and Appleton. Haber made 10 saves in the period, including a handful of clutch stops on the Eagles' lone power-play, to preserve the 2-0 lead after one.
The Eagles came out gunning through the majority of the second period, but Haber was rock-solid in net, stopping 19 shots in the second stanza alone. The guests added to their lead with 3:37 left as Warren slapped home a Tara Watchorn feed from the top of the left faceoff circle.
Appleton notched her second goal of the season with 1:11 to go in the second, striking from the same spot that Warren did two minutes earlier off assists from Jonnie Bloemers and Cardella. A late BU penalty put BC on the power-play but Haber stopped a low drive from the right faceoff circle to help the Terriers hold a 4-0 lead after two.
Shots were scarce through the third for both teams as the Terriers evened the season series with the 4-0 final.
The Terriers are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 as they travel to Lewiston, Maine to take on the Black Bears in a 7 p.m. game.
