LEWISTON, Maine – Jenelle Kohanchuk was the lone goal-scorer in the shootout as the women’s ice hockey team took a 1-1 (1-0) shootout win over Maine on Tuesday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The Terriers move to 6-4-6 on the season and 4-3-2-2 in conference action while Maine’s record stands at 3-9-3 on the year and 1-5-2-1 in Hockey East play.
Kohanchuk was the second BU shooter in the shootout and faked her shot right before burying a left-side wrister to seal the win. BU goalie Melissa Haber finished the night with 26 saves while her counterpart Brittany Ott stopped 33 shots on the night.
BU got on the board early in the first, taking a 1-0 lead with just 5:47 gone in the second. Melissa Anderson won a faceoff in the Maine zone and fired a shot on net. Black Bear goalkeeper Brittany Ott made the save but Jill Cardella was on the doorstep for the rebound and buried the puck for a 1-0 lead.
The hosts struck back just three minutes later as Dominique Goutsis converted feeds from Brittany Dougherty and Ashley Norum to knot the score at one apiece.
Despite holding a slight edge in shots, the Terriers were unable to convert any chances through the third period. BU goalie Melissa Haber swatted away a promising Maine chance late in the third to force overtime.
Jonnie Bloemers started the overtime period with a slapshot from the left faceoff circle, but her effort struck the post and bounced away. BU kept the pressure on Ott through the extra stanza, but the freshman held firm to force the shootout.
Strong defense on the part of the Black Bears was the theme early as the hosts held the Terriers without a shot through the first eight minutes of the opening period. Despite five penalties between the two teams, neither team could convert on the power-play and the first period ended in a 0-0 tie.
The Terriers are back in action on Nov. 27-28 as they take on ECAC Hockey foe Princeton at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink in Princeton, N.J. Both games are slated to start at 4 p.m.
