BOSTON - In the highest attended college hockey game in eastern United States history, Boston University defeated archrival Boston College, 3-2, Friday night at Fenway Park in front of 38,472 fans. The Terriers, who were playing in their first outdoor game in over 50 years, jumped out to a 3-0 lead before holding off the No. 7/8 Eagles to improve to 6-9-3 overall and 4-7-2 in Hockey East play.

Sophomore David Warsofsky opened the scoring in the first period before junior Joe Pereira and freshman Wade Megan added second-period tallies to make it a 3-0 advantage. BC scored a late power-play goal in the second and got within one on a shorthanded tally 7:43 into the third.

Clinging to the 3-2 lead with just over two minutes to play in the game, the Terriers caught a break when BC's Brian Gibbons was sent to the box, putting the Terriers on a man-up advantage for nearly the remainder of the game. The Eagles pulled their goalie for the final 40 seconds of the game and had a number of chances to net the equalizer, but were unable to get a clean look at the net as BU escaped from the home of the Red Sox with the gutsy 3-2 win.

Sophomore goaltender Kieran Millan made 27 saves for the Terriers, who held a 31-29 shot advantage for the game. The Eagles, who slip to 10-6-2 with a 7-4-2 conference mark following the loss, received a 28-save performance in goal from John Muse.

In his first game back after winning a gold medal with Team USA at the World Junior Championships, Warsofsky started the scoring for the Terriers with a blueline blast that eluded Muse 6:58 into the opening period. Zach Cohen was credited with the assist on the play, which occurred during the first BU power-play of the game.

Another fresh face to the Terrier lineup made a contribution early in the second as Pereira, skating in his first game since the Dec. 5 game against the Eagles, put the Terriers up 2-0 with his fourth tally of the season. Junior Colby Cohen blasted a shot from the blueline that Muse deflected off to his right where Pereira corralled the puck and wristed in a return shot that banked off Muse's right blocker and into the net.

The Terriers extended their lead to 3-0 midway through the second period when Megan potted the second goal of his rookie campaign. Megan stuffed home a flailing puck through a scrum of Eagle defenders after junior Nick Bonino and freshman Sean Escobedo worked the puck deep into the BC zone. Escobedo recorded his first point as a Terrier with an assist on the play while Bonino recorded his seventh helper on the season. Each of the second-period BU goals were reviewed as the net came loose on both occasions, but both tallies were upheld after a brief video review.

After going 0-for-4 on power plays on evening and 0-for-10 on power-plays in two games against the Terriers, the Eagles finally broke through with a man advantage at the 18:19 mark of the second period. Paul Carey found Brian Gibbons with space in the BU defensive end and Gibbons best Millan for his eighth tally and team-leading 19th point of the season.

A BC penalty gave the Terriers another power-play early in the third period, but it was the Eagles that cashed in on the infraction. Philip Samuelsson dished a pass to Gibbons who found a streaking Cam Atkinson who netted his ninth goal of the year to bring the Eagles to within one at 3-2 with 12:17 to play. The tally marked the first shorthanded goal allowed by the Terriers this season.

BU is back in action on Friday, Jan. 15, as it travels to Providence to take on the Friars in a 7:30 p.m. game. The game is the fourth straight televised game for the Terriers as NESN will broadcast the contest from Providence.
