LOWELL, Mass. - The No. 5/6 Boston University men's ice hockey team continued its undefeated start to the season with a convincing 5-1 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday evening at the Tsongas Center. Five different players found the back of the net for the Terriers, who improve to 5-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Hockey East play.

Junior Chris Connolly, sophomore Alex Chiasson and freshman Sahir Gill each earned a goal and an assist while junior David Warsofsky picked up a pair of assists. Junior Corey Trivino and freshman Charlie Coyle also scored a goal.

Junior goaltender Kieran Millan turned in a 27-save performance, as the River Hawks (1-3-2, 1-3-0) outshot BU, 28-23. Freshman Marc Boulanger recorded 15 saves on 20 shots for Lowell in two periods of work before classmate Doug Carr stopped all three shots he faced in the third period.

With the result, BU reached the five-win mark 65 days earlier than last season, as the 2009-10 Terriers did not pick up their fifth victory until Jan. 2. The Terriers have now matched their best start through six games over the past 32 years, as the 1991-92 squad also went 5-0-1 as part of a 6-0-1 start. The 1978-79 team won its first seven games.

The Terriers opened the scoring at the 17:31 mark of the first when Chiasson recorded his first collegiate shorthanded goal off a nice setup by Warsofsky.

BU took a 5-0 lead thanks to a four-goal second period that was ignited by a three-goal spurt in a span of just 3:11. Gill capped the productive stanza with the Terriers' second shorthanded goal of the night.

UMass Lowell got its lone goal from Joe Caveney with 5:50 left in regulation when the sophomore poked in a rebound on assists from junior Michael Budd and freshman Josh Holmstrom.

The River Hawks went 0-for-5 on the power play, as the Terrier penalty kill has now been successful on 28 of its last 29 situations. BU came up empty on four chances with the man advantage.

After Chiasson's man-down tally gave BU a 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission, the visitors continued to build on their lead by notching their first four-goal stanza since Nov. 14, 2009, at Merrimack.

Connolly potted his second goal of the year just 1:59 into the second with an easy redirect from above the right post on assists from sophomore Ryan Santana and freshman Garrett Noonan.

Trivino made it a 3-0 affair just over two minutes later. A blast from the left point by freshman Adam Clendening went off Chiasson's stick and bounced off the boards right to Trivino who snuck the puck past Boulanger with some quick stickwork by the left post.

Just 55 seconds later, Coyle capped the three-goal run when he teamed up with Gill on a 2-on-1 rush and converted a top-shelf wrister from the right circle. Senior Joe Pereira also assisted on the tally.

Gill's shorthanded marker came on a breakaway at 16:11 of the second following a perfect redirect by Connolly at center ice. Warsofsky started the play after picking off the puck in the BU zone. Gill backhanded the puck between Boulanger's legs for his third tally of the season.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend home-and-home series on Saturday (Oct. 30) at Agganis Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
