BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team (2-3-0) dropped a hard-fought match to No. 6 Boston College (3-0-1), 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. The two squads battled through 63 scoreless minutes until the Eagles broke through with the game's lone goal off a corner kick. BU returns to action on Monday (Sept. 6) when it travels to Monmouth for a 2 p.m. kick off.
BC maintained an 11-5 edge in shots, while both squads drew two corner kicks. Freshman Kelly King got the nod in net in the first half and came up with two saves, while junior Alice Binns made three stops in the second half - including an impressive diving save in the 72nd minute.
The Terriers' backline held a BC side that averages three goals per game to its lowest point total since its season opener with Stanford, while also forcing the Eagles into five offsides.
For most of the first half, the Terriers controlled the run of play, spearheaded by junior Brittany Heist, who was creative in the middle in switching fields and finding seams in the Eagles' defense; however, neither team was able to generate much offense with a combined six shots through the first 45 minutes.
With 15 minutes remaining in the first stanza, BC's Victoria DiMartino had the best opportunity as she broke through the backline on a near breakaway; however, senior Corie Halasz hustled back to tackle away the chance and preserve the shutout. The Terriers continued to provide solid defense as Halasz again booted a potential shot on goal out of harm's away in the 32nd minute.
At the start of the second half a revitalized BC side began to apply more pressure in the offensive third and in the 64th minute, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead when they earned a corner kick on the near right side. BC's Hannah Cerrone stepped up to take the restart and sent it right into the six-yard box, where Kristie Mewis one-timed it into the lower left side.
BC's Stephanie Wirth nearly gave the Eagles a two-goal lead in the 72nd minute, however, Binns - aggressive off her line - made a point-blank diving stop up near the top of the 18-yard box. Two minutes later, Wirth unleashed a strike that was sailing toward the upper left corner, but Binns came up with the leaping stop.
Over the final three minutes, the Eagles controlled possession and kept heading to the corner flags as the seconds ticked off the scoreboard. The Terriers' made one final push in the final 20 seconds with graduate student Lisa Kevorkian sprinting into the box, but with defenders flanking on either side her shot went high.
BU will return to the pitch on Monday (Sept. 6) when it heads to Monmouth for a 2 p.m. kick off.
