VESTAL, N.Y. - The Boston University men’s soccer team suffered a 5-1 setback at Binghamton on Sunday to close out the 2011 regular season.

The Terriers (9-8-0, 5-2-0 AE) were already assured of a bye to the semifinals, but will have to wait until later tonight to learn if they clinched the America East regular season crown. If Stony Brook defeats Hartford when the two schools take the pitch at 5 p.m., the Seawolves will finish in first place.

Sophomore Kelvin Madzongwe notched his first goal of the season for BU in the 22nd minute to make it a 2-1 game. However, Binghamton (5-10-2, 1-5-2 AE) scored once more in the first half and then twice in the second half to secure the victory.

The Bearcats scored just 3:25 into the proceedings when Jake Keegan capitalized on a corner kick to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead. Fifteen minutes later, Ryan Walter blasted a shot from 20 yards out that beat freshman keeper Nick Thomson (two saves).

Madzongwe made it 2-1 with an indirect kick to give the Terriers new life. However, Binghamton answered in the 38th minute when Keegan tallied his second of the game.

Despite the 3-1 deficit, BU had earned five corner kicks to Binghamton’s one. The Bearcats also only registered just one more shot than the Terriers, leading that race, 6-5.

Binghamton made it 4-1 in the 56th minute when Adam Whitehead converted a breakaway chance. Jerome Robinson added the fifth goal in the 72nd minute to close the scoring.

Regardless of where they finish, the Terriers will host a semifinal matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Nickerson Field.
