BOSTON - Senior Krista Minto scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Boston University women's soccer team past Illinois State, 3-2, on Friday night at Nickerson Field. With the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Terriers improve to 2-0-1, while the Redbirds of the Missouri Valley Conference drop to 1-2-0.
BU had a 3-0 lead with 8:16 remaining in regulation, but freshman Rachel Tejada rattled off a goal one second later and added another in the 87th minutes to cut the deficit to one. After the second score, the Terriers clamped down on defense to squash the rally for the victory.
Named America East Player of the Game, Minto scored the first goal at 42:40 off a free kick from senior Jessica Luscinski and then assisted classmate Brittany Heist for another score at 58:05. Two freshmen connected on the third goal 19 minutes later when Ana Cuffia sent a cross past an ISU defender to Taylor Krebs, who notched her first career score.
On the first goal, Luscinski proved effective on a free kick for the third straight game. Standing between the box and corner marker, she kicked the ball toward the near post, and Minto finished for her third career goal. With the assist, the reigning America East Player of the Week and Striker of the Year Luscinski moved into a tie for fifth-place all-time at BU with Kara Olivo ('99) in assists with 17 total. She now needs just three points to tie Stacy Shwartz ('99) for sixth-place in career points at 64.
The Terriers carried a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half after hitting the crossbar twice. Luscinski nailed it at 12:12 from outside the box with a shot that didn't dive enough at the end, and Heist's header off a Luscinski cross rose a few too many inches at 29:43.
The lead doubled when Heist took a pass from Minto, made a quick turn and then rifled a shot toward the upper left corner of the net for her fifth career goal. Krebs pushed the lead to three at 77:58, giving BU its first three-goal game against a non-conference opponent since the Terriers defeated Connecticut, 3-0, on Sept. 19, 2010.
Senior Alice Binns recorded one save, while ISU's Mara Kremenovic had four. The Terriers held a 21-11 advantage in shots and 7-4 lead in corner kicks.
Looking to earn head coach Nancy Feldman's 300th career victory, the Terriers will next host Loyola (Md.) on Saturday (Aug. 27) at 4 p.m. Fans will receive free admission due to the game being pushed up from Sunday as a result of Hurricane Irene.
