BOSTON - Top-ranked Connecticut stopped three shot attempts from the Boston University men's soccer team and scored in the 79th minute to earn a 1-0 victory on Friday night at Nickerson Field. Avenging a 3-0 defeat in 2009 to the Terriers (1-4) in Storrs, the Huskies improve to 6-0 with their third straight and fourth overall shutout of the season.

The game went back and forth throughout with both teams having several opportunities, and UConn's Allando Matheson finally broke the deadlock at 78:15. Tony Cascio placed the ball in the box, and Matheson dribbled around a defender and fired past freshman Nick Thomson for the score.

Senior Ben Berube led BU with three shots, while freshman Cameron Souri added a pair of his own. Berube had an opportunity in the 15th minute when he received a pass in the right side of the box and shot toward the far post, but the Huskies' Andre Blake dropped to the ground and used his right hand to swat the ball away.

Finishing with a 13-7 advantage in shot attempts, UConn came close to scoring in the 33rd minute when Carlos Alvarez placed a corner in the box. Andrew Jean-Baptiste managed to get his head on the ball but placed the pass above the crossbar.

During the 64th minute, the Huskies were on the attack again, as Thomson stopped a hard shot from Colin Bradley from a few yards out for his third and final save of the night. The rebound went straight to Alvarez, whose left foot tapped the ball wide of the empty net.

Berube tried to answer the goal at 82:20 with a rising shot from 25 yards out, but Blake was in prime position to stop the attempt.

The Terriers pressured UConn again in the final minutes by substituting an extra attacker for a defender. On its last gasp, BU moved the ball up the field on the left side to get into position to create another scoring opportunity but was caught offsides in the box with a minute remaining, as UConn improved to 28-13-2 in the all-time series.

With the loss, the Terriers will next travel to in-state rival Massachusetts on Sunday (Sept. 18) with the game set to start at 1 p.m.
