DURHAM, N.H. - Sophomore Kaleigh Fratkin and senior Jenn Wakefield each scored a goal, but the Boston University women's hockey team was defeated by New Hampshire, 4-2, on Thursday night.
BU (11-12-1, 6-7-0 WHEA) took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but three goals from New Hampshire (9-13-3, 3-7-2 WHEA) in the second stanza gave the Wildcats the lead for good.
Several Terriers kept their point streaks intact, including Wakefield, who now has a seven-game streak. Junior forwards Cristina Wiley and Jill Cardella each recorded a point for the second straight contest. Freshman forward Kayla Tutino now has a point in five of the last six games.
The Terriers struck first at the 4:40 mark of the opening frame. Wiley skated down the left wing and fed a pass across the top of the crease for Fratkin, who redirected it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Cardella was also credited with an assist.
The Wildcats responded well after the goal, but sophomore goaltender Kerrin Sperry (18 saves) stayed strong between the pipes, including a nifty left pad save with traffic in front of her as the teams reached the midway point of the period.
The lead was nearly doubled with 6:45 remaining in the first, but junior forward Isabel Menard's wrist shot hit the crossbar. UNH outshot BU, 9-7, in the first period, but the Terriers skated well and had the better of the opportunities.
UNH made it a 1-1 game at the 9:20 mark when Heather Kashman notched a power play goal from the left circle as Sperry, who had made two spectacular saves just prior to the tally, was screened. The Wildcats then took a 2-1 lead just over two minutes later when Nicole Gifford knocked home a loose puck from the top of the crease.
BU earned a power play just 27 seconds after UNH took the lead, and the Terriers made the most of the opportunity when Wakefield sent a shot through Wildcat goaltender Lindsay Minton's pads to tie the score, 2-2. Senior defenseman Kasey Boucher and Tutino assisted on Wakefield's 12th goal of the year.
The home side responded with a goal at the 16:30 mark of the middle frame when Emma Clark notched her fifth goal of the season. The Wildcats added one more at the 6:14 juncture of the third period as Jenna Lascelle lit the lamp on the power play.
The Terriers made every effort to rally after the fourth UNH goal, as they applied consistent pressure in the offensive end and caused havoc in front of Minton's cage. However, Minton (27 saves) stopped all 13 shots BU threw her way in the final frame.
This was the last road contest of the month for the Terriers, as BU will host four straight games at Walter Brown Arena to close out January. The homestand will begin on Saturday afternoon when Vermont visits Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
