BOSTON - Sophomore Nick Thomson recorded seven saves and played the final 25 minutes down a player to help the Boston University men's soccer team earn a 0-0 draw against Vermont on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field. Matching the most draws recorded in a season since 2007 with four, the Terriers (4-5-4, 1-0-2 AE) extend their unbeaten streak to four games, while the Catamounts move to 5-4-4 and 2-0-1 in league play.
In a physical contest that saw both teams combine for 44 fouls, the Terriers' Max White received his second yellow card of the game at 85:35. BU's backline held strong though and limited the Catamounts to two shots on goal the rest of the contest.
Vermont came out attacking with the first five attempts of the game before sophomore Dominique Badji sent BU's first shot high over the goal at 19:30. The Terriers regained momentum and entered the locker room with a 9-8 edge in shots.
The teams continued to go back and forth in the second half with first place in the conference standings on the line. BU's best look came in the 73rd minute when Badji sent a cross into the box for senior Michael Bustamante to head at net. Conor Leland though was in perfect position in the middle to make the save.
Named America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, freshman Carlos Ruiz rifled an attempt from 25 yards out at the left post, but Leland made the diving save to finish with seven stops on the night.
In a closely-contested game, Vermont finished with an 18-15 advantage in shots, while the Terriers had a 5-4 lead in corners. Both teams were caught offsides on five occasions as well, as BU improved to 26-10-8 in the rivalry dating back to 1972.
Prior to the game, BU was honored by a very nice gesture from the Vermont program, as the Catamounts presented the Terriers with a plaque honoring their 40 years of competition between the two programs and the last 25 in the America East.
Competing in its final season in the conference before joining the Patriot League on July 1, 2013, the Terriers will next hit the road and visit UMBC on Saturday (Oct. 13) with action set to begin at 3 p.m.
