WEST POINT, N.Y. - Highlighted by freshman Lauren Davis advancing to the round of the 32 in both singles and doubles, the Boston University women's tennis team continued its fall season this past weekend at the ITA Northeast Regional at Army's Licthenberg Tennis Center. The Terriers went a combined 3-4 in singles and 1-2 in doubles action.
Seeded 32nd, Davis received a bye in the first round and then dropped just three games in a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 victory over UConn's Maxie Weinberg. She was unable to stage an upset though in the round of 32, falling to Yale's No. 7 seed Hanna Yu in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.
She started the event on Friday in doubles with fellow freshman Madison Craft. The duo claimed a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Niagara to reach the round of 32. Their run though quickly came to an end though against No. 16 seed Army, as Erin Colton and Jamila Paul averted an upset bid at 8-6.
In other singles action, junior Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis rallied from a set down to defeat Long Island Sanne Lowyers, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Advancing to the round of 32, she then dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Boston College's No. 5 seed Jessica Wacnik.
Ranked as high as No. 67 nationally last spring, Athanasiadis and senior Jessi Linero opened doubles as a No. 16 seed. They drew a tough pair from Brown though with the Bears advancing after claiming the tiebreaker in a thrilling 9-8(5) match.
Sophomore Sami Lieb was the third Terrier to win a singles match. She cruised in the first set and then held off Drexel's Zeynep Mafa in the second for a 6-2, 6-4 win in the round of 128. During the following match against Princeton's No. 11 Amanda Mulliawan, she tried to rally back in the second set but ultimately fell, 6-1, 7-5.
Besides competing in doubles with Davis, Craft also tried to reach the singles main draw in the qualifying rounds. She battled top seeded Iona Alecsiu from Columbia in both sets but could not get the break points when needed in a 6-4, 6-4 battle.
The Terriers will have two weeks to prepare for Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational, which will begin on Friday, Nov. 2.
