America East All-Academic Team

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Monika Mical and sophomore Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis of the Boston University women's tennis team were named to the America East All-Academic Team, the league office announced Thursday. The Terriers were the only program to feature two players on the squad.

Earning her second All-Academic award, Mical was the lone Terrier to appear in every match this season. Featuring a 3.81 GPA, she picked up six wins in singles action during the spring and went 8-12 in doubles. She will graduate from BU with a degree in psychology.

Also majoring in psychology, Athanasiadis earned America East All-Conference Second Team honors earlier in the month. Holding a 3.32 GPA, she went 12-12 during the year, including 2-2 in the top slot. Her biggest highlight of the season came in doubles when she and junior Jessi Linero pulled out an 8-5 victory over Yale's No. 22-ranked pair of Vicky Brook and Hanna Yu. Finishing 14-10 on the season, they both earned All-Conference First Team Doubles honors.

The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Director meetings, where faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference's nine member institutions decided to honor the league's top student-athletes, whom excel equally in the classroom as they do on the playing field.

For the fourth straight year, America East will select the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA's Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time, for example, six student-athletes in the sport of tennis. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
