Inside BU Hockey - Episode 14
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After spotting Providence a pair of early goals, the No. 10/11 Boston University men's ice hockey team rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Friars on Friday evening at Schneider Arena.
Sophomore Evan Rodrigues singlehandedly erased the deficit with a pair of goals and junior Sahir Gill provided the game-winner with 12:46 left in regulation. Freshman goaltender Sean Maguire turned in a standout 32-save performance, stopping the final 23 shots he faced.
BU improves to 13-9-0 overall and 10-6-0 in Hockey East play and clinches its season series against the Friars thanks to its 4-2 win over them on Oct. 13 at Agganis Arena. Providence falls to an even 10-10-3 with an 8-6-2 conference mark.
The Friars opened the scoring just under eight minutes into the contest when Ross Mauermann finished off a pass by Paul de Jersey following a neutral-zone turnover by the Terriers.
Under nine minutes later, PC doubled its first-period lead as Brandon Tanev knocked the puck in after the Terriers were unable to clear the puck away after blocking a shot in the high slot.
The Terriers were able to get on the board before the first intermission, however, as Rodrigues was the beneficiary of a nice pass by freshman Danny O'Regan and sent home a shot with 43 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
Rodrigues struck again in the second, evening the score and tallying the lone goal of the period. Just under three minutes in, the sophomore backhanded a rebound past Providence netminder Jon Gillies from the low right slot to finish off a rush. Freshman Matt Grzelyck and O'Regan assisted on the play.
The game-winner came just moments after Rodrigues left the game due to a hand injury. Gill converted a wraparound at the left post at the 12:46 mark of the third to give the Terriers a lead they would not relinquish.
The visitors gave PC a pair of power-play chances down the stretch, but the Terrier defense and Maguire were up the challenge and BU earned its sixth Hockey East road win in its last seven tries.
Gillies made 22 saves for the Friars, who held a 34-25 shot advantage. BU (0-for-4) and PC (0-for-3) each came up empty on its power play.
The teams will complete their weekend home-and-home series on Saturday (Jan. 26) at Agganis Arena in a game that will be broadcast by NESN. Opening faceoff is set for 7:05.
