WAKEFIELD, Mass. - After the Boston University women's ice hockey advanced to the program's second Frozen Four in three seasons, junior Kerrin Sperry and freshman Sarah Lefort each earned weekly honors from Hockey East, the league office announced on Monday.
Sperry secured Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after she made 34 saves to help BU defeat Clarkson, 5-3, in an NCAA quarterfinal contest on Saturday at Walter Brown Arena. She stopped at least 10 shots in each period, including 14 in the second stanza. Sperry is now 3-2 all-time in the NCAA tournament, including a 2-0 record in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Lefort earned her second straight Rookie of the Week award thanks to a two-goal effort on Saturday. Her first unassisted goal in the third period extended the Terriers' lead to 3-1 before she closed the scoring with an unassisted empty-net goal with less than a minute remaining in regulation. On the season, Lefort has 23 goals and 19 assists for 42 points.
In addition to the individual honors, BU shared Team of the Week accolades with Boston College. Both schools advanced to the Frozen Four and could potentially meet in the national title game on Sunday.
BU will face Mercyhurst in the second semifinal on Friday night at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET.
