Coach Sheehan's post-match comments
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Facing a two-point deficit, the Boston University women's tennis team won the final three singles matches to earn a 4-3 upset victory at No. 63 Boston College on Wednesday afternoon. Snapping a three-match losing streak to the Eagles (9-8), the Terriers end the 2012-13 season with a record of 11-6.
With the win, BU also ended a 13-match losing streak to ranked opponents dating back to 2011 and defeated its highest-ranked opponent since a 4-3 victory at then-No. 52 VCU in 2009.
Entering the contest with three wins this season over an ITA-ranked team, including a 4-2 victory over then-No. 20 Florida State, the Eagles edged BU in two tightly-contested doubles matches for the first point. They then won two of the first three singles contests before the Terriers rallied with three wins, highlighted by two come-from-behind three-set victories.
After dropping the No. 1 doubles match, 8-5, BU served for the win at both No. 2 and 3 doubles, but the Eagles rallied to win the No. 3 contest, 9-7. As a result, the No. 2 match was halted with the score, 8-8.
Rebounding from the doubles loss, freshman Kim McCallum coasted past Sarah Dalton, 6-2, 6-2, for BU's first point at No. 6 singles.
Ranked as high as No. 45 this season, BC earned the next two points with a 6-0, 6-3 win over junior Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis and 7-6, 6-3 victory against senior Jessi Linero at the No. 4 and 5 slots, respectively.
Named America East Player of the Week back on Tuesday and playing in her final match as a Terrier, senior Vivien Laszloffy rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, setting the stage for two thrilling matches.
Competing at the top slot, freshman Lauren Davis faced off against Jessica Wacnik, who was the nation's No. 26 recruit in 2011 and was coming off a straight-set win against Florida State's No. 109th-ranked Francesca Segarelli. Davis only captured two games in the first set but rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Sophomore Sami Lieb also dropped her first set and battled to a second-set tiebreaker with the final team point up for grabs. She prevailed and then coasted in the third to earn a 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 victory.
Banned from the America East tournament due to this summer's move to the Patriot League, the Terriers finish with double-digit wins for the 23rd time in the last 24 years under head coach Lesley Sheehan.
They will lose 2012 All-Conference honorees Laszloffy and Linero to graduation but will return nine women, as BU gets set for its first season in the Patriot League.
