ORONO, Maine - Three different Terriers lit the lamp and sophomore
Victoria Hanson combined with freshman
Erin O'Neil for a 24-save shutout as the No. 6 Boston University women's ice hockey team opened its Hockey East schedule with a 3-0 win over Maine on Friday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Senior captain Marie-Philip Poulin opened the scoring in the second stanza with her fifth goal of the season. Freshman Victoria Bach and junior Sarah Lefort also found the back of the net. Lefort added an assist on Poulin's strike for her fourth multi-point game of the season. The defensive pairing of junior Lillian Ribeirinha-Braga and sophomore Sarah Steele each assisted on Bach's goal while senior Shannon Doyle had an assist on Poulin's marker.
Hanson earned the victory after she made 20 saves. She was injured with 13:01 remaining in regulation, however, and O'Neil came in to make four saves and preserve the shutout. The BU defense was once again strong, allowing fewer than 30 shots on goal for the fifth consecutive contest.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Poulin put BU ahead for good just 28 seconds into the second period. Doyle sent the puck towards the net, and Lefort, stationed in the right circle, knocked the puck down and flicked it with her backhand to Poulin. The senior captain fanned on her first attempt from between the circles, but she recovered the puck and did not fail to finish on her second try.
Bach added to the Terriers' lead at the 12:54 mark of the middle frame. Steele emerged from a battle along the half-wall and sent the puck across the top of the Maine zone. Ribeirinha-Braga got the puck at the left point and fired a shot on goal. Bach was crashing the net and the puck deflected off of her and past Meghann Treacy. Video review confirmed it was a good goal, the third of Bach's young collegiate career.
Lefort added an insurance goal 8:30 into the third period when she gathered the puck into the neutral zone and skated into the offensive end unimpeded. She unleashed a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Treacy high to the glove side for her third goal of the season.
BU and Maine will conclude the weekend series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
