BOSTON - The Boston University a men's soccer team hits the road for the next three games, beginning with a trip to Holy Cross on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Terriers (6-2-1, 2-0-0 PL) are currently riding a five-game unbeaten streak following Saturday's 2-0 victory over Army and are one of two unbeaten teams in Patriot League action alongside Lehigh (6-3-0, 2-0-0 PL).
In the latest RPI rankings, the Patriot League is the ninth toughest out of 24 conferences. BU sits at No. 60 overall with Holy Cross (4-3-2, 1-1-0 PL) just behind at No. 74 after last week's 1-0 win at Northeastern and 3-2 double overtime loss at American.
Last season, the Crusaders overcame a 21-9 shot deficit by utilizing a five-man backline and converting on a counter attack in the 88th minute to escape with a 1-0 victory against BU at Nickerson Field. The two squads met for the fourth time in five years after a 36-year break in the series.
Now in the same conference, the teams will face off as fellow league members at Smith Soccer Stadium for the first time. Senior Dominique Badji will be looking to avenge last season's one-goal loss after recording a game-high six shot attempts, including two on net. He has recorded all five of his goals this year in the last four games and is currently second in the PL in points per game at 1.33.
On Saturday, Badji scored in the 12th minute with assistance from sophomore Felix De Bona and freshman Bjarki Benediktsson. Three minutes later, sophomore David Asbjornsson headed in a free kick from Benediktsson, who is now tied-for-fourth in the PL with three helpers this season. In total, nine Terriers have earned at least one point with five recording at least one goal and assist.
Defensively, BU is coming off its fourth shutout of the season after senior Nick Thomson stopped two shots from Army. He owns a 0.829 save percentage and 0.64 goals against average. The previous shutouts came against Iona, Fordham and UMass.
The Crusaders are unbeaten at home with a 2-0-2 record and have tallied two goals in three of the contests. Reigning PL Offensive Player of the Week Joey DeVivo has a team-high three goals after scoring the game-winner against Northeastern and a goal against American. Justin Carfora is one of 13 men with at least one point and leads Holy Cross with eight off two goals and four assists.
Kevin Wright has started all nine games at net and has shutouts against Northeastern and Loyola. He owns a 1.25 goals against average and 0.750 save percentage. Last season, he hauled in seven saves with the backline adding another to defeat the Terriers.
Following the game, BU will remain on the road and visit Lehigh on Saturday (Oct. 11) at 7 p.m.
