BOSTON - Earning its third shutout of the season, the Boston University men's soccer team used goals by senior Jordan Barker and sophomore David Asbjornsson to claim a 2-0 victory over in-state rival UMass at Nickerson Field Saturday night.
Despite the rain, the Terriers dominated possession throughout to improve to 3-2-0, as the Minutemen fell to 0-5-0. Senior Dominique Badji had a season-high eight shot attempts and set the tone early with a hard shot that led to a corner at 1:00.
BU kept the pressure on the Minutemen and finally got on the scoreboard in the 29th minute when the Terriers played the ball into the box. Trying to clear the ball, a UMass defender misplayed it high into the air back toward the goal. Unmarked, Barker moved into position to head the ball past Ryan Buckingham for his first career BU goal.
Looking for a second goal, the Terriers were on a counter attack in the 42nd minute when they drew a foul just outside the box. Asbjornsson rifled the ball over the wall of defenders toward the right post for the 2-0 advantage.
During the second half, UMass tried to pick up the tempo and doubled its shot attempt from the first half with six in the final 45 minutes of regulation. BU's backline though was in position to maintain the two-shot advantage.
In the last two games, BU finished with a combined 29-14 margin in fouls for back-to-back 1-0 defeats. In the win against the Minutemen, they finished at 10-10.
During the 88th minute though, UMass' Josh Schwartz placed a free kick near mid-field inside the box. Matt Pease had a hard header but went wide right of the goal. Senior Nick Thomson stopped a total of three attempts from the Minutemen for the victory, while Buckingham had one save.
The Terriers will next visit crosstown rival Northeastern on Tuesday (Sept. 16) at 6 p.m.
