Field Hockey Falls to No. 12 Stanford, 3-0

DURHAM, N.H. - The Boston University field hockey team fell to No. 12 Stanford by a score of 3-0 on Friday evening in a neutral-site contest played at Memorial Field. The Terriers drop to 1-2 on the year while the Cardinal remains undefeated at 4-0.

Stanford took an early lead when Alex McCawley scored her first of two goals on the night just 3:23 into the contest. Her attempt from the right side to the far post went off senior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke and then off a BU defender before sneaking past the goal line.

The Terriers threatened on the on the other end a handful of times the remainder of the half, but were unable to set up a strong scoring chance.

BU held a 4-3 advantage in shots at halftime and Stanford's lone shot on goal of the opening stanza found the back of the cage.

The best chance for either team in the latter half belonged to the Terriers, as sophomores Sara Martineau and Taylor Blood teamed up for a 2-on-1 rush. Martineau's effort from the right side sailed wide of the far post.

The Cardinal used rebounds in front to extend their lead in the second half. McCawley made it a 2-0 contest in the 47th minute and Casey Deeds created the 3-0 final when she scored with 6:47 remaining in regulation.

For the game, Stanford outshot BU, 13-5, and earned eight corners while allowing two. Sophomore Amanda Cassera registered a pair of shots on goal for BU.

Cerda Eimbcke recorded six saves in goal for the Terriers and was aided by a defensive save from sophomore Hester van der Laan. Dulcie Davies stopped all three shots she faced to earn the shutout for the Cardinal.

The Terriers will take a day off before returning to action on Sunday (Sept. 7) for a home contest against Pacific. Game time at New Balance Field is set for 3 p.m.
