BOSTON - With an early lead in hand, the Boston University women's soccer team pulled off its third-straight shutout victory on Wednesday night, defeating Holy Cross, 3-0, on Nickerson Field to remain unbeaten in Patriot League play and take a 2-0 lead in the Turnpike Trophy standings.

The Terriers (8-5-3, 6-0-1 PL) have not given up a goal for the last 296 minutes, shutting out Lafayette, Lehigh and the Crusaders (4-8-3, 1-4-2 PL) along the way.

Rachel Bloznalis was named the Turnpike Trophy Game MVP for her outstanding performance both on defense and set piece service. The junior scored the first goal of her career on a free kick from 25 yards out and followed it up minutes later with a defensive save on the goal line to preserve the shutout.

On the first play of the game, Dorrie Varley-Barrett capitalized on a goalie miscue to make it a 1-0 Terrier lead just over one minute in. Jenna Fisher sent a ball into the box which the Holy Cross goalie came out to defend but couldn't keep a handle on it and it was stolen back by Christina Wakefield, who sent it over to Varley-Barrett to set up the eventual game-winner.

The Crusaders stepped up their intensity, however, and didn't allow BU any more goals in the half despite 11 shot attempts including three on net. After failing to put together an offensive try for much of the opening period, Holy Cross rattled off three shots on target, all of which senior goalkeeper Alyssa Parisi saved.

One attempt in particular made the Terrier fans' gasp as speedy Annie Galvin broke away from the BU defense and met up with Parisi high in the box. The veteran goalie stood her ground and Galvin's shot went straight into her chest, despite plenty of open field, to maintain her shutout streak, now at four games.

Coming out of halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Terriers kept the pressure on and made it a two-goal advantage in the 61st minute. Game MVP Bloznalis used a set-piece, her specialty, to tuck one into the top left corner for the first goal of her career.

McKenna Doyle topped off the Terrier tally in the 84th minute when she netted an excellent cross from Rachel Blauner to make it a 3-0 victory. The freshman now leads the team with 13 points this season.

Parisi made four saves while in net and made her exit following the third BU goal to let sophomore Hannah Ciolek make her first collegiate appearance. Ciolek made a save in just over six minutes between the pipes.

BU outshot Holy Cross, 17-9 including 7-6 on net. The Terriers also had more chances from set pieces including three more corners and two more free kicks.

The Terriers are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 24 when they head to Army for a 3 p.m. matchup in the hopes of clinching a Patriot League Regular Season Championship.
