STORRS, Conn. – Senior Rebecca Russo recorded two goals and sophomore Rebecca Leslie added a pair of assists, but the Boston University women’s ice hockey team had to settle for a 4-4 tie at UConn on Saturday at Freitas Ice Forum.

BU (11-7-1, 8-3-1 WHEA) scored three times in the first and once in the second, but UConn (7-7-3, 3-4-1 WHEA) rallied for three goals in the third period to salvage a point.

Sophomore Victoria Bach notched her third goal in two games and her 10th marker on the season, and junior Samantha Sutherland also lit the lamp. In addition to Leslie, five other Terriers had an assist on Saturday. Junior Alexis Crossley and senior Sarah Lefort had the helpers on Bach’s goal while seniors Jordan Juron and Alexis Woloschuk assisted on Sutherland’s strike. Junior Maddie Elia also got on the scoresheet with an assist on Russo’s second goal.

Erin O'Neil made 29 saves to help the Terriers secure a share of the spoils. Nineteen of the sophomore's stops came in the final two periods; she also saved three attempts in overtime.

BU was dominant in the first period and was rewarded with a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. Bach opened the scoring at the 12:26 mark when she deflected a Crossley shot past Annie Belanger (28 saves). The Terriers were shorthanded just over three minutes later when Leslie and Russo combined on a 2-on-1 to make it 2-0. Leslie skated up the left wing and found Russo on the doorstep for a tap-in finish.

Russo collected her second goal of the game with 1:10 to play in the period when Elia retrieved a puck behind the net and fed Russo at the right post, but the Huskies responded 3:39 into the second stanza to cut the BU lead to two goals. O’Neil made two sensational stops about 8:00 into the frame to keep the Terriers ahead by two, and she was kept busy in a period in which UConn outshot BU, 11-4.

Sutherland regained a three-goal lead for the Terriers at the 15:13 mark of the stanza when she knocked home a rebound at the top of the crease after Juron redirected a Woloschuk shot from the left point.

UConn began its comeback just 33 seconds into the final frame when Theresa Knutson scored her second goal of the game. Jaime Fox made it 4-3 at the 11-minute mark before Justine Fredette tied the game on the power play with 2:21 remaining in regulation.

Both teams generated three shots on goal in the extra session, with Leslie nearly combining with Russo again for the game-winner. BU held possession for the final 30 seconds but was unable to get another puck past Belanger.

The two teams will conclude the regular-season series on Sunday at Walter Brown Arena. After the game, all fans are invited to join the Terriers for a postgame skate on the ice. Please bring your own skates. A changing area will be provided for fans to put on their skates. For questions, please email GoBU@bu.edu.
