CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 6 Boston University women's ice hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 1 Boston College on Thursday night at Conte Forum.
BU (21-8-2, 15-5-0 WHEA) had its four-game win streak snapped by the Eagles, who improved to 30-1-1 overall and 20-0-0 in league play. It is only the second time the Terriers have been shutout this season. Freshman Erin O'Neil made 30 saves for BU.
BC took a 2-0 lead into the second period, but it was all Terriers in the middle stanza. BU outshot the Eagles, 16-7, and was perhaps a bit unlucky to come out of the frame without a goal. Twice they appeared to be done in by a quick whistle as a scrum ensued outside the crease. The Terriers enjoyed four power plays over that 20-minute span and got big minutes from the top line of Sarah Lefort, Marie-Philip Poulin and Kayla Tutino, but entered the locker room with a 4-0 deficit.
The fourth goal came with the BU net empty as the Terriers pulled O'Neil in favor of an extra attacker, creating a 6-on-4 advantage with 22.9 seconds to play. BC cleared the zone and despite Poulin's attempt to block the ensuing shot, Haley Skarupa scored to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
Junior Lillian Ribeirinha-Braga had a great bid early in the third period when she drove to the net, but Katie Burt made one of her 28saves to keep the Terriers off the board. Poulin then had two tries on an abbreviated power-play chance, but she was twice denied. Alex Carpenter tallied a shorthanded goal late in the game to conclude the scoring.
The Terriers will honor their senior class on Saturday afternoon when they host the Eagles at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. In addition to Senior Day, it is also the eight annual ChiliFest. Fans will be able to try free samples of five different chili recipes from BU Dining.
