VERONA, N.Y. - The Boston University women's tennis team opened defense of its Patriot League title with a 4-0 win against Bucknell in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the Sportsplex at Turning Stone.
In a rematch of last year's semifinals, the Terriers (12-7) won two doubles contests by a combined score of 16-3 for the first point and then dropped a total of five games in three singles victories for the team win.
Freshman Iryna Kostirko teamed with junior Kim McCallum at No. 3 doubles for an 8-2 win and followed up with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 performance at No. 3 singles.
Sophomore Barbara Rodriguez was also successful in both events, posting an 8-1 doubles win in the No. 1 slot with junior Johanna Hyoty and 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.
Junior Lauren Davis won the other singles point at No. 1 against Bucknell (6-15), 6-0, 6-1.
Due to the seeding this year, BU will next face either 2014 PL runner-up and 15-time champion Army West Point on Saturday at 2 p.m. Last year, the Terriers dropped the doubles point in a hard-fought battle but came back to win four straight singles points for the title.
Army blanked Colgate, 4-0, in its quarterfinal matchup and enters the contest at 15-10 with an earlier 5-2 defeat against BU. In that match, the Black Knights claimed the doubles point again and defeated Hyoty in straight sets. The Terriers though won three singles points in straight sets with the other two wins requiring three sets.
