The Boston University women's ice hockey team will continue its four-game road trip this weekend when the Terriers travel to Penn State for a two-game series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
Â
This is the first time that BU (2-1-0, 2-1-0 WHEA) will skate at Penn State (1-3-0, 0-0-0 CHA) in program history. The schools met for the first time last season at Walter Brown Arena, with BU winning the second game, 3-1, after a 5-3 defeat to the Nittany Lions the previous night.
Â
BU enters the weekend having suffered its first setback of the season, a 3-2 loss at Vermont, on Sunday. Despite that, the Terriers still have the third-ranked offense in the country, scoring four goals per game. Much of that production has come off the stick of senior Samantha Sutherland, who leads the nation with seven goals. Sutherland has also been the most efficient goal scorer in the country with an NCAA-best shooting percentage of 53.8.
Â
Sutherland has not been alone in compiling this excellent start, helped by linemate Sammy Davis. The sophomore leads the country in assists per game (2.67) and is second in the nation with eight total assists, just one behind the leader. Six of Davis' eight assists have been the primary helper, which ranks second in the country.
Â
Penn State is 1-3-0 after splitting a weekend series at Union on Oct. 7-8. After an 8-1 win on Friday, the Nittany Lions suffered a 4-2 setback on Saturday, which was Union's first win since Dec. 12, 2014.
Â
Laura Bowman leads PSU with five goals and seven points, while Brooke Madsen, Kelly Seward and Bella Sutton all have a team-best four assists. Seven different skaters have scored a goal this season and six different players have at least three points. Penn State has the best shooting percentage in the country at 15.1 entering this weekend.
Â
Hannah Ehresmann and Daniela Paniccia have each started two games between the pipes, with Paniccia earning the lone win. Paniccia owns a 2.55 goals-against average while her colleague has a 3.02 GAA; both netminders enter the weekend with a .924 save percentage.
Â
The Terriers will have a quick turnaround following this weekend's series as they will head to Northeastern on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
