The Boston University women's ice hockey team will host Merrimack at Agganis Arena on Saturday in the back end of a home-and-home series with the Warriors that begins Friday night in North Andover, Massachusetts. Saturday's tilt is scheduled for 3 p.m., while the teams will skate on Friday at 7.
BU (5-5-1, 4-5-0 WHEA) is looking for its first weekend sweep of the season after splitting games against then-No. 4 Boston College (Nov. 4-5) and Maine (Nov. 11-12) in each of the last two weekends. The Terriers have history, albeit brief, on their side, as they swept the Warriors last season by a combined score of 15-5. That included a 5-1 win at Merrimack on Nov. 20, 2015, highlighted by Victoria Bach's first collegiate hat trick. She collected her second three-goal game this past Friday in a 5-3 win at Maine.
Bach finished the three games against Merrimack with four goals and three assists for seven points, tops among all current Terriers. Alexis Crossley (3g, 1a) and Samantha Sutherland (1g, 3a) each recorded four points against Merrimack last year, and all three goaltenders saw action against the Warriors. Erin O'Neil won two of those tilts, while Victoria Hanson shined in her one start, allowing just one goal.
Despite being held to just one goal for the first time this season on Saturday, BU still enters the weekend with one of the most feared offenses in the country. The Terriers are fourth in the country and first in Hockey East with an average of 3.73 goals per game. They have scored at least five goals in all five wins this season.
A milestone may be reached this weekend by Bach, who is two points from 100 for her career. She, along with linemates Mary Parker and Nina Rodgers, have been terrific since their first game on the same line, which was Oct. 15 at Penn State. Since then, Parker, Bach and Rogers are 1-2-3 in points on the Terriers with 14, 12 and seven, respectively. The trio is also a combined plus-18 in that span, with 14 of Parker's 17 total points this season coming with the two juniors as her linemates.
After posting a 5-26-3 record in its inaugural season, Merrimack is off to a 4-8-1 start in year two. The Warriors enter this weekend on a four-game losing streak, which includes a pair of 4-2 losses to Northeastern during a home-and-home series last weekend.
Sophomore Katelyn Rae leads Merrimack with nine goals and is second on the squad in points (10) behind classmates Jessica Bonfe and Paige Voight. Those two each have 11 points. Sophomore Allison Sexton leads the team with eight assists. Freshman goaltender Lea-Kristine Demers has started 10 games this season, posting a 4-6-0 record thanks to a 3.54 goals-against average and an .892 save percentage.
It will be a short turnaround for the Terriers following this weekend's series, as BU will head across the river to face Harvard on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
