BOSTON - Seeking a second consecutive NCAA tournament berth, the Boston University men's soccer team kicked off the 2016 preseason with its first official practice Friday morning at Nickerson Field. Entering his 32nd season at the helm of the Terriers, head coach Neil Roberts welcomes eight newcomers and 23 returnees, including nine starters from last season.

Top returners include a pair of 2016 MAC Hermann Award Watch List members, senior Felix De Bona and junior Anthony Viteri. They combined for 15 goals and four assists last season to help the Terriers accomplish back-to-back 12+ win seasons for the first time since 1993-94. Fifth-year senior Matt Gilbert is the reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Year and will serve as a team captain alongside De Bona and Viteri.

Sophomore Magnus Benediktsson is the reigning PL Rookie of the Year after leading BU last year with six assists, just ahead of classmate T.J. Butzke (4a,2g) and senior Mark Wadid (4a,1g). Senior David Asbjornsson joined Gilbert and Benediktsson in claiming year-end honors with his first Defender of the Year award.

BU's preseason training schedule consists of two sessions a day in preparation for the upcoming season. The team will participate in two scrimmages, first visiting New Hampshire on Tuesday (Aug. 16) and then hostong Rhode Island on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The season opens at rival Boston College on Sunday, Aug. 28. BU will host nine regular season games, starting with back-to-back games against UMass (Sept. 10) and Northeastern (Sept. 13).
