HOW IT HAPPENED
- Reigning PL Defender of the Year and senior David Asbjornsson gave BU the lead at 18:11 when he charged toward the goal and flicked inside the far post a 25-yard curling free kick from classmate Mark Wadid.
- Alex DeSantis netted the equalizer in the 30th minute off a header past the diving senior Matt Gilbert inside the left post that was set up by Brandon Merklin's long throw-in and Josh Jess' own header that floated toward DeSantis.
- After receiving a centering pass from sophomore T.J. Butzke, junior Anthony Viteri put the Terriers ahead for good by curling around a defender outside the top of the box and rifling a low shot toward the right post.
- Though not credited with an assist on the game winner, freshman Jerry Ozor made a critical play by saving a long pass in front of the UMass goal line and getting the ball to Butzke.
- Gilbert made two saves in the second half to secure the victory, including one off a point-blank header from Josh Jess off a UMass corner.
GAME NOTES
- Led by senior Felix De Bona's four shot attempts, BU finished with a 17-8 lead in shots and 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
- Jorge Becerra had three saves, including two in the second half, for the Minutemen, while DeSantis had a team-high three shots.
- A member of the MAC Hermann Award preseason watch list, Viteri has now scored in both games this season. He has tallied a combined four game winners in two years with the Terriers.
- Asbjornsson recorded his third-career goal and his first since 2014. Coincidentally, one of the two goals his sophomore year came against the Minutemen off a set piece with him taking the kick that time.
- Both Wadid and Butzke recorded their first assists of the season after finishing tied-for-second last season with four helpers apiece.
- The Terriers extended their unbeaten streak to a personal-best six games (4-0-2) against UMass in a rivalry dating back to 1951 with the last loss occurring in 2008.
- BU has won two of the last three home openers.
NEXT UP: Northeastern
- The Terriers will face their third straight in-state rival, Northeastern, on Tuesday (Sept. 13) night at Nickerson Field with action set to begin at 7 p.m.
- BU owns a 20-7-1 advantage in the all-time series and will be hosting the Huskies for the first time since a 1-0 win in 2013.
- Fans unable to attend will be able to watch the game on the Patriot League Network.
