Gilbert's Career Day Preserves 1-1 Draw at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Highlighted by senior Matt Gilbert's career-high 10 saves and junior Anthony Viteri's fifth goal in six games, the Boston University men's soccer team pulled out a 1-1 draw at Bucknell in the Patriot League opener for both squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams were scoreless through the first 45 minutes despite Bucknell owning an 8-1 advantage in shots and the Terriers leading in corner kicks, 4-1.
  • The Bison struck first in the 47th minute when Patrick Mahoney headed in Dan Bank's corner kick past senior Matt Gilbert.
  • With less than 17 minutes remaining in regulation, junior Anthony Viteri sent a shot from the right side to the left post with an assist from freshman Jerry Ozor.
  • Emmett Witmer recorded two saves in the final six minutes of regulation and posted four more in the first overtime to keep the game tied.
  • Gilbert tallied two saves in the second overtime. 

GAME NOTES

  • All five meetings between the Terriers and Bison have gone to overtime with Bucknell owning a 2-0-3 advantage in the series.
  • Gilbert's 10 saves topped his previous high of nine set against Army in 2013.
  • Viteri has scored a goal in five of six contests with his lone assist occurring in the other game.
  • Ozor's assist marked his third of the season after he tallied two in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Brown.
  • Down by as many as 14-3 in shot attempts, the Terriers attempted 15 of the game's final 25 shots while finishing with a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.
  • BU avoided the shutout but was blanked in the first half for the first time this season. 
  • The Terriers are still seeking their first road win of the season with a 0-2-1 record. 
NEXT UP: HARVARD
  • The Terriers will conclude their two-game road trip at Harvard on Tuesday (Sept. 27) with a 7 p.m. start time.
  • Harvard leads the all-time series, 25-15-7, in a rivalry that dates back to 1951, but BU is 5-3-3 in the last 11 meetings.
