ORONO, Maine – The No. 3/4 Boston University men's ice hockey team posted a 3-1 road victory at Maine on Saturday evening to earn a season sweep of the Black Bears for the third straight year and improve its nation-best win streak to eight games.
THE RUNDOWN
Final Score: #3/4 Boston University 3, Maine 1
Records: BU (16-5-2, 9-2-2 Hockey East), Maine (8-13-3, 2-9-1 Hockey East)
Location: Alfond Arena – Orono, Maine
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Special teams gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead through two periods as freshman Clayton Keller scored his third shorthanded goal of the year in the opening period and classmate Patrick Harper doubled the cushion with a power-play marker in the middle stanza.
- Maine used a fortunate bounce on a power play to get on the board early in the third but the Terriers used an insurance goal from junior Brandon Hickey to create the 3-1 final.
- On the Black Bears' second power-play chance of the night, Keller picked off a pass at the top of the Maine zone and skated in all alone before backhanding a shot past netminder Rob McGovern at 15:23 of the first.
- On the second BU goal, Harper was the beneficiary of a cross ice pass by sophomore Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and he cashed in from the right circle for his first tally since Dec. 9.
- The only blemish for freshman goaltender Jake Oettinger, who finished with 26 saves, was a deflected shot that popped over his shoulder and gave Blaine Bryon his team-leading 11th goal of the season for Maine.
- Hickey regained the two-goal edge for the visitors on a rush midway through the third by jumping on a rebound in the left circle from a Keller shot and converting on a wide-open look for his fourth goal of the year.
GAME NOTES
- BU is now 10-1-1 over its past 12 games and its eight-game win streak is its longest since one of the same length at the end of the 2014-15 season.
- The Terriers and Oettinger have gone four full games without allowing an even-strength goal.
- Keller extended his point streak to 10 games (7g, 10a) while sophomores Jordan Greenway (1g, 8a) and Forsbacka Karlsson (7g, 4a) pushed theirs to eight and seven games, respectively.
- Forsbacka Karlsson and Keller now share the team lead in goals with 10 apiece.
- McGovern had a 34-save performance in goal for Maine as the Terriers held a 37-27 shot advantage.
- BU has won its first six January games, a feat last achieved during the 1977-78 season, when the Terriers went on to claim their third national title.
