CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After capturing its fourth-straight automatic NCAA berth, the Boston University women's tennis team received a pair of major Patriot League year-end awards and had three members earn All-Conference honors, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
With the announcement,
Remi Ramos becomes the first sophomore to be named Patriot League Player of the Year since
Johanna Hyoty ('16) received the first of three straight year-end awards in 2014, while 32nd-year head coach
Lesley Sheehan now ranks second all-time in the PL with four Coach of the Year awards after entering the conference in the summer of 2013. Both junior
Iryna Kostirko (1st) and senior
Barbara Rodriguez (2nd) joined Ramos in being named to one of the two All-PL squads.
A native of Parkland, Florida, Ramos posted a combined 12-7 record at lines 5 and 6 her rookie season and vaulted up to the No. 2/3 slots this year following the graduation of Hyoty and four-time All-Conference First Team honoree
Lauren Davis ('16). She came up big in their absence with a team-high 18 singles victories and a stellar 7-0 mark against Patriot League competition. She has also won her last seven matches in straight sets, including the PL championship clinching win at No. 2 against Army West Point.
Kostirko received her third All-PL award and returned to the first team after collecting 10 singles wins, including five at line 1 against the stiffest competition faced by any Terrier this season. Previously named the PL Tournament MVP in 2015, the native of Mississauga, Canada, had impressive victories against the top players from Navy (2x), Stony Brook, Bryant and Holy Cross.
Rodriguez caps her career with her third All-PL Second Team honor after posting eight singles wins during the spring. The Caracas, Venezuela, native won all three matches at No. 3 in dominating fashion to claim 2017 PL Tournament MVP honors. She also had key victories this season against Lehigh, Stony Brook and Florida Atlantic.
On the doubles end, all three Terriers shared time with one another and sophomore
Sabrina Faybyshev. Ramos and Rodriguez posted a 4-5 mark at No. 1 doubles during the dual season after Ramos teamed with Kostirko for a 3-3 record in the No. 2 slot. Kostirko finished the season with Faybyshev, winning five of their last six matches at line 2.
This past season was a challenging one for Sheehan, who needed to reshuffle her lineup after the loss of three valuable seniors. The team only edged Navy, 4-3, back in February after winning the last two titles against the Midshipmen by a combined score of 8-1 and then suffered its first-ever PL defeat to Army (4-2) two weeks prior to the conference tournament. The players though under her watch dug deep as the No. 2 seed and won 11 of 12 singles matches over a three-day period to remain atop the conference.
The Terriers will resume play when they visit No. 15 Duke on Friday (May 12) at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
