TEMPE, Ariz. - The Boston University men's ice hockey team is making its furthest trip in over a decade to take on Arizona State in the first meetings with college hockey's newest addition. The series opens on Friday (Jan. 26) at Gila River Arena and wraps up on Saturday (Jan. 27) at the Sun Devils' Oceanside Ice Arena. Both games start at 9 p.m. ET.
Both games will be streamed for free via Facebook Live on the Sun Devil Hockey and Pac-12 pages, as well as Pac-12.com/live.
Back at .500 thanks to a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1), the Terriers will look to continue their strong play as of late. This is the furthest west the Terriers traveled in the contiguous United States since the Great Western Bank Freezeout in Los Angeles during Thanksgiving weekend in 1994. Gila River Arena, the home of the Arizona Coyotes, will be the sixth NHL rink that the Terriers have played in over the past nine years.
Arizona State is 3-2-1 since the turn of the new year, claiming wins over Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech to claim the inaugural Ice Vegas Invitational title before splitting with UMass Lowell with identical 4-0 victories. Last weekend, the Sun Devils tied Quinnipiac, 2-2, before dropping a 5-3 contest the following night. This series marks the end of a six-game homestand for the Sun Devils.
Sophomore blueliner Brinson Pasichnuk leads the team in both points (19) and assists (13). He is one of six Division I defensemen to currently be leading his team in scoring. Classmate Brett Gruber has tallied 15 points on four goals and 11 assists. Freshman Johnny Walker has a team-best eight goals and is tied with sophomore Tyler Busch (7g, 7a) for third in points with 14.Â
Sophomore Joey Daccord has started in goal in 24 of ASU's 26 games this season and sports a 3.26 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.
Greg Powers is in his 10th season as head coach at his alma mater and this is the program's third season at the Division I level.
The Terriers are coming off a home-and-home sweep of Merrimack. Sophomore defenseman Dante Fabbro capped his first collegiate hat trick with 4:29 left in regulation to lift the Terriers to a thrilling 4-3 road win in the opener. The next night at Agganis Arena, junior Bobo Carpenter scored two goals, including the game-winner, and assisted on the other tally in a 3-1 victory.
It marked BU's first two-win weekend of the season and was also the team's first wins of the season when outshot.
Carpenter's big game vaulted him to the team lead in points with 23. His 13 goals are tied for third amongst Hockey East players.
Sophomore goaltender Jake Oettinger has posted a .925 save percentage and 1.96 goals-against average during the four-game unbeaten streak.
