DAY 2 RECAP

WEST WINDSOR, NJ - Highlighted by an eighth-place team finish, the Boston University men's rowing team competed in Day 3 of an abbreviated IRA National Championship Regatta on Sunday. Overall, the Terriers advanced all four boats to the semifinals, advanced its 3V8 and V4 boats to the grand finals, and finished fifth overall in the third varsity eight competition.
As a team, BU tallied 131 Ten Eyck points and placed eighth out of a field of 24.
At the completion of the morning eights grand finals, the competition was canceled due to deteriorating weather conditions.

• The No. 8 varsity eight competed in a six-boat petite final against against No. 9 Syracuse, No. 7 Northeastern, No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 Dartmouth and No. 14 Wisconsin.
• In a very close and exciting petite final, Northeastern got out to an early lead and was followed closely by BU and Syracuse. The Terriers continued to battle with Syracuse and Dartmouth for second and third at the 1000 meter mark with all three crews within three seats. Syracuse and Dartmouth pushed ahead of the Terriers over the final 500 meters as BU fell to fourth ahead of Stanford and Wisconsin. The Terriers finished fourth with a time of 6:37.42, ahead of Stanford (6:40.96) and Wisconsin (6:42.04). NU finished first (6:30.35), followed by Syracuse (6:30.53) and Dartmouth (6:33.80).

• The No. 13 Terriers's 2V competed in the petite final against No. 5 Brown, No. 8 Dartmouth, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 11 Cornell and No. 10 Wisconsin.Â
• In the petite final, Dartmouth got out to an early lead, with Brown in second and BU in third. Brown passed Dartmouth at the 500m mark as Brown and BU battled for second. Brown opened up a length lead over the second-half of the race as Dartmouth and BU continued to fight for second. BU caught and passed Dartmouth with 500 meters to go as the two boats continued to battle down the stretch along with a surging Syracuse. But the Terriers' 2V poured it on down the stretch and took second with a time of 6:51.05, behind race-winner Brown (6:47.05) but ahead of Syracuse (6:53.50), Dartmouth (6:54.46), Wisconsin (7:01.12) and Cornell (7:02.56).

• The No. 6 BU third varsity eight raced in the grand final on Sunday against No. 1 Washington, No. 2 Yale, No. 3 California, No. 5 Harvard and No. 7 Northeastern.
• In the grand final, Washington got off to a very fast start followed by Harvard and California while the Terriers battled Yale and Northeastern for fourth at the 1000m mark. The Terriers continued to battle Yale and Northeastern for fourth with several lead changes over the second half of the race. Yale moved ahead of BU down the stretch as BU pulled away from Northeastern over the final 100 meters. BU finished fifth with a time of 6:49.15, ahead of Northeastern (6:53.01). Washington won gold (6:33.54), followed by Harvard (6:37.21), Cal (6:42.55) and Yale (6:45.80). Â

• On Sunday the varsity four grand final was canceled due to weather.
• In a very exciting semifinal race on Saturday, the BU V4 took second to advance to the grand finals. All six crews got off to an even start with all boats within contact at the 500 meter mark. Drexel surged well ahead at the 1000 meter mark and was followed by BU and Holy Cross. BU and the Crusaders battled for the all-important second spot for the remainder of the race with several lead changes but the Terriers pulled away from Holy Cross down the stretch to finish second. Drexel finished first with a time of 6:31.91, followed by BU (6:38.04), Holy Cross (6:39.14), Georgetown (6:39.43), Dartmouth (6:41.99) and Brown (6:48.01).

WASHINGTON AND YALE - 2018 IRA CHAMPIONS
• The Washington Huskies won the Jim Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy as the overall points champion with 211 points for the second-consecutive year and the 11th time in the last 12 years. The Huskies finished second in the varsity eight grand final, first in the second varsity eight grand final and first in the third varsity eight grand final.
• In an early grand final on Sunday, Yale won the men's heavyweight eight championship, finishing first in the varsity eight grand final with a time of 6:01.64, ahead of rival Washington who won silver (6:04.33) while California took home bronze (6:08.91).Â
