Former Boston University standout Alex Chiasson will have his name etched on one of the greatest trophies in sports after his Washington Capitals finished off this year's Stanley Cup Final with a 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 on Thursday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
It marks the third straight year that a Terrier is on the Cup-winning team as head coach Mike Sullivan and Nick Bonino won back-to-back titles with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. Chiasson becomes the ninth Terrier to hoist the Cup as a player or coach and it will be the 13th time a member of the BU hockey family will have his name on the Cup. In addition to Bonino and Sullivan, Jay Pandolfo and Scott Young also won the Cup on two occasions.
The title was the first in Capitals' history as the 43-year old franchise was in the Final for the first time in 20 years. Chiasson played in 14 games during the playoffs and recorded Washington's lone regulation goal in a 2-1 overtime win against Pittsburgh to clinch their second-round series in six games. He also picked up an assist against Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Final. During the regular season, Chiasson tallied 18 points on nine goals and nine assists in 61 contests.
Chiasson played three years at BU from 2009-12 and led the team in scoring in each of his final two seasons. He finished with 99 points (36g, 63a) in 100 games before signing an entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars. In six NHL seasons, the St. Augustin, Quebec, native has appeared in 381 games and cumulated 59 goals and 65 assists for 124 points.
