October 23, 2019

The No. 10 Boston University women's ice hockey team will conclude a stretch of five straight road games this weekend when the Terriers travel to Penn State for a two-game series that begins Friday.

ROAD WARRIORS

  • The Terriers have only played one game at home this season.
  • They won't play two consecutive home games until Nov. 12, 15 and 19 when they host Yale, Boston College and Harvard.
  • BU is 3-1-0 away from home.

HISTORY WITH PENN STATE

  • This will be the Terriers' second trip to Penn State and fourth series overall with the Nittany Lions.
  • They are 2-2-2 all-time with PSU.
  • BU previously visited Penn State on Oct. 14-15, 2016, earning a 7-2 win and a 3-3 tie.

LAST TIME AGAINST PSU

  • BU hosted Penn State for two games at Walter Brown Arena last year, with the teams skating to a 1-1 tie on Dec. 30 before the Nittany Lions earned a 1-0 win the next day.
  • Corinne Schroeder made 20 saves in the tie.
  • Sammy Davis scored the tying goal thanks to an assist by Jesse Compher.
  • Kate Stuart made 33 saves the next afternoon in the hard-fought loss.

BEST OF BU AGAINST PENN STATE

  • Sammy Davis is the only skater to have appeared in every game BU has played against Penn State.
  • She has tallied three goals against the Nittany Lions.
  • Jesse Compher and Alexandra Calderone each have one assist against PSU.

NEWS ON THE NITTANY LIONS

  • This will be the second straight weekend that Penn State faces a Hockey East opponent, as the Nittany Lions skated at Providence on Oct. 18 and 19.
  • They defeated the Friars, 4-2, on Friday before earning a 2-2 tie in the weekend finale.
  • That tie extended Penn State's unbeaten streak to four games.
  • Senior Katie McMillan leads the team in assists (4) and points (6).
  • Junior Natalie Heising has a team-high three goals and is second to McMillan with five points.
  • Ten different Nittany Lions have at least two points.
  • Junior goaltender Chantal Burke has started six of the seven games in which she has appeared.
  • Burke is 3-2-2 with a 2.15 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage; she also has two shutouts.

RECAPPING A FOUR-POINT WEEKEND

  • BU won both of its games this past weekend, earning a 1-0 win at UConn on Oct. 18 and a 3-1 triumph at Maine on Oct. 20.
  • Junior Corinne Schroeder stopped all 38 shots she faced and senior Deziray De Sousa scored her first goal of the year with 51.4 seconds to play in the second stanza to lift BU to the win at UConn.
  • Senior Abby Cook and sophomore Courtney Correia assisted on that goal.
  • Schroeder made 11 of her 38 saves during the penalty kill.
  • At Maine, junior Kristina Schuler opened the scoring just 1:06 into the proceedings thanks to assists by junior Nara Elia and senior Breanna Scarpaci.
  • Elia then assisted on sophomore Kaleigh Donnelly's power-play strike in the second stanza to make it 2-0.
  • Maine made it 2-1 just 13 seconds later, but Schroeder made 16 of her 27 saves in the final 20 minutes to keep Maine from tying the tilt.
  • With just 1:15 remaining in regulation, sophomore Courtney Correia iced the game with an empty-net goal.
  • Cook and Donnelly assisted on Correia's marker.

SCHROEDER EARNS WEEKLY AWARD

  • Junior Corinne Schroeder was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
  • She stopped all 38 shots she faced in a 1-0 triumph at UConn on Oct. 18 before making 27 saves in a 3-1 win at Maine on Oct. 20.
  • No other goaltender who played at least 60 minutes this weekend posted a better save percentage (.985) or goals-against average (0.50) than Schroeder.
  • Friday's shutout was the third of Schroeder's career and first since a 3-0 win at Maine on Jan. 6.
  • Schroeder's first collegiate shutout came on Nov. 16, 2018, in a 3-0 victory over Vermont.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS FOR SCHROEDER

  • Schroeder leads the NCAA with a .965 save percentage over four starts, while her 0.98 goals-against average is the second lowest mark in the country.
  • The Elm Creek, Manitoba, native has not allowed more than one even-strength goal in all four starts she has made this season.
  • Schroeder has been particularly strong in the third period, as she is one of only five goalies in the NCAA to not have allowed a goal in the final 20 minutes.
  • She has made 40 third-period saves, the most among that group of five goalies, and she has also played the most minutes (80:00) of that quintet.

TERRIERS TEND TO FINISH STRONG

  • BU has allowed a mere 0.20 goals per game in the third period this season, which ranks second only to Bemidji State's mark of 0.17 goals per game.
  • The Terriers are a perfect 3-0-0 when leading after two periods this year.

DONNELLY HAS CAREER DAY AT MAINE

  • Sophomore Kaleigh Donnelly's second career goal proved to be the game-winner at Maine on Sunday.
  • Donnelly also matched her career high in points thanks to her primary assist on Courtney Correia's empty-netter.
  • It was Donnelly's fifth career multi-point effort.
  • She now has four points (1g, 3a) this season, including the primary helper on the game-winner at Union on Oct. 6.
COOK CASHES IN
  • Senior Abby Cook is riding a three-game point streak that began with her first goal of the season on Oct. 12 at New Hampshire.
  • She recorded an assist in both victories this past weekend, including the primary helper on the game-winner at UConn on Oct. 18.
  • Cook now has four points in five games this season.
  • This is a continuation of her strong play in the offensive zone from last season, when she posted career highs in goals (8) and assists (20).
  • In 116 career games, the two-time Hockey East and New England All-Star has notched 15 goals and added 58 assists for 73 points.

CORREIA HAS BEEN CONSISTENT

  • Sophomore Courtney Correia enters the weekend on a three-game point streak.
  • Correia collected an assist at New Hampshire on Oct. 12 and also had a helper in the 1-0 win at UConn.
  • She continued that streak thanks to her first goal of the season at Maine.
