BOSTON - The Boston University men's ice hockey program will honor its Miracle on Ice alumni on Saturday (Feb. 29) when it hosts archrival Boston College in the third meeting of the season between the Comm Ave. schools. Game time at Agganis Arena is set for 7 p.m.
For the first time since being honored at Walter Brown Arena in 1980, "The BU Four" will reunite on campus with Jim Craig, Mike Eruzione, Jack O'Callahan and Dave Silk taking part in a pregame ceremony. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 6:55 p.m. and wear Scarlet for RED THE RINK.Â
BU dropped a 4-3 road contest to the Eagles back on Jan. 18 before coming out on top in the Beanpot semifinals, 5-4, in a game that was recorded as a tie since it was decided after 65 minutes of play.
The Terriers are looking to rebound from a pair of losses to UConn last weekend and enter Saturday with a record of 12-11-8 overall and 9-7-5 in Hockey East play.
BU is currently in sixth place in the Hockey East standings with 23 points, just two points behind a two-way tie for fourth place and two points ahead of a two-way tie for seventh. Three games remain in the regular season and the Terriers can still finish anywhere between second and ninth.
To secure a Hockey East playoff spot on Saturday BU needs a win plus a Providence/UNH loss or tie or a tie plus a Providence/UNH loss.Â
The Comm. Ave. rivals have met 281 times and the Terriers lead the series, 135-126-20 (.516). No other opponent has appeared on BU's schedule more often. Northeastern is the next closest, having faced BU 240 times since the 1930-31 season.
BU is 5-4-2 against BC since the start of the 2016-17 season. The Terriers are only 4-13-2 (.263) in the 19 meetings at Agganis Arena.Â
BC has reeled off six straight wins and clinched at least a share of the Hockey East regular-season title in the process. The Eagles are 12-3-0 in road games this season.
BC's top wins have come against Providence, Notre Dame (2), Massachusetts, Harvard (2) and Northeastern (2).Â
Senior Julius Mattila has team highs in points (40) and assists (30) while freshman Alex Newhook (18g, 21a) and classmate David Cotton (14g, 24a) are right behind with 39 and 38 points, respectively. Junior Logan Hutsko and Hutsko are tied for the squad lead in goals at 18 while seniors Ben Finkelstein (+30) and Jesper Mattila (+29) rank 1-2 in the country in plus-minus.
BC boasts the top offense in the country, averaging 4.10 goals per game, and its scoring defense - at 2.10 goals per game - ranks seventh nationally.
Freshman Spencer Knight has quickly emerged as one of the top netminders in college hockey as his 2.01 goals-against average and .928 save percentage rank ninth and 12th nationally, respectively.Â
BU erased three one-goal deficits but then-No. 5 Boston College got the game-winner with 5:40 left in regulation in a 4-3 contest on Jan. 18 at Conte Forum. Patrick Curry scored two goals for the Terriers.
They met again in the first round of the Beanpot with BU rallying from a 3-1 deficit with three-third period goals in an eventual 5-4, double-overtime triumph thanks to a tally from freshman Wilmer Skoog.
The Terriers and Eagles are two of only three teams (the other being Arizona State) in the country to have three players with 33 or more points this season. Junior David Farrance leads the way for BU with 39 points while senior Patrick Harper and freshman Trevor Zegras have added 36 and 33 points, respectively.
Farrance is tied for 10th nationally - and first among defensemen - in points per game at 1.26 while Harper is 12th at 1.24. Zegras is 24th at 1.10, which ranks third among Division I rookies. Farrance needs one more point to become the first Terrier blueliner since Tom Poti in 1997-98 to record 40 points in a season.
Curry has a point in four straight games (2g, 2a) while sophomore Jake Wise has five points (1g, 4a) over the past five contests.
